New York November 5 Republicans faced near panic as the New York Herald poll indicated Wilson leading nationwide. The Herald, once a Hughes backer, reported a clear trend toward Wilson and felt forced to concede defeat for the Republican candidate.
President Wilson sent a nationwide telegram thanking volunteers and workers for progressive principles. He urged renewed vigilance to counter late anti progress charges and emphasized prosperity, tariff moves, a tariff commission, the Federal Reserve Act and Federal Trade Commission guarding commerce and elections.
An opposition paper's forecast of Wilson's win spread through the city causing a quick betting shift. Hughes, once 10 to 7 favorite, moved to even money as forecasts of Wilson strengthen with Midwestern returns. Ohio appears Democratic, boosting Wilson's prospects overall. London, Nov. 5. Lieutenant-General Bryan on, commander of British forces on the western frontier in Egypt, is named to succeed Sir John Maxwell as commander in Ireland. Maxwell becomes commander-in-chief of the northern command in England. Sir F Reginald Wingate, Egyptian army commander, is appointed high commissioner for Egypt succeeding Sir Arthur Henry MacMahon.
Fourteen thousand worshippers filled the air with fluttering handkerchiefs as they pledged allegiance to the coming Sunday revival at the dedication of the Boston Billy Sunday tabernacle, one of the nation’s largest religious buildings.
A large throng marvels at a sun day revival site with a forest of steel uprights and bulging iron stoves in a vast building. The tabernacle choir of 4000 performs as acoustics are praised, with lights seen from top windows by 2 o'clock. Continued on Page 7-First Column.
At Everett Washington the waterfront violence left five dead and about 40 wounded as 250 IWW members arriving from Seattle and a 150-strong citizen posse led by Sheriff Don McRae exchanged about 1000 shots. The Verona retreated to Seattle after the melee.
Berlin reports the Overseas News Agency says Germany and Austro Hungary proclaimed the kingdom of Poland from Warsaw and Lublin. A Polish delegation met Chancellor von Bethmann Hollweg and the nation is to have its own government and army with General von Beseler as chief authority for now.
The Eighth Massachusetts infantry National Guard returned to Boston early this morning. At daylight they rested in tourist cars near Fitchburg depot after a dawn welcome from awaiting friends and relatives. A 9:30 parade through city streets will honor them with a review by Governor McCall Adjutant-General Pearson and Mayor Curley.
At daylight the Ninth Were near the State House region. The first section with the Worcester Clinton Lowell and Lawrence companies will reach Worcester about 10 o'clock. They will then be entrained for their home station. Colonel Logan.

Forecast calls for fair conditions in northern New England and eastern New York on Monday with partly overcast skies and warmer Tuesday. Southern New England should also see fair weather Monday and Tuesday with a warmer Tuesday and moderate easterly to southerly winds.
