Shoe Trust Wins Suit Over Patent Assignment

United Shoe Machinery Company won a suit against Beverly resident Euclid Lachapelle to compel assignment of a patent for a machine that pulls the upper over the last. Judge Hardy decreed the company entitled to enforce the contract signed at employment. Lachapelle invented the device, asked $50,000, then left the firm. The decision held that inventions are not monopoly items under the Sherman act, a question likely to reach the Supreme Judicial Court.
