Political tempers and electoral talk in the era
The piece surveys party tensions across Virginia New York and Massachusetts. It notes one Republican official’s opposition to Mahone, mentions fundraising for a horse-killing Herdic project in Haverhill, cites naval pay disputes and Pinafore as cultural touchstones, and comments on editorials about officeholder assessments in New York. It also records Staunch party loyalties and candidate discussions in Suffolk and South Boston districts, plus internal party disputes over credentials and calls for withdrawal to secure a united vote.

Congress
pensions office seeks 100 million appropriation for next year
Washington report states Col. Ducley, pension commissioner, asked the secretary of the interior to request Congress to appropriate 100 million dollars for pensions for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1983, plus a 20 million deficiency for arrears. He estimates 40,000 claims will be allowed this year, up to 60,000 next year with more clerical staff. Arrears average about 1500 per claimant, and paying them off may raise this year’s disbursement to 70 million and next year to 100 million to cut future annual charges. The annual pension roll is expected near 33 million this year, never exceeding 40.8 million.
