Geraldine Farrar arrived in Boston aboard the Knickerbocker express at 6 PM. She said she would rather meet one average Harvard graduate than three average grand dukes, but the cold weather prevented further reference to her NY remark. She wore a blue tailor-made suit.
Miss Farrar wore a French blue suit with silver tipped muskrat furs and a black dome hat as she arrived with her mother and maid. C A Ellis, manager of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, greeted them and escorted the party to a taxicab stand. A reporter intercepted Miss Farrar before departure.
City Hall officials say Felix Mc Gettrick and Philip Sondheim may be added to the Civil Service Commission’s rejected list. Appointed Oct. 6 as penal commissioner and children’s institutions trustee, their status hinges on approval at tomorrow’s last regular meeting before the time limit expires and the appointments become null and void.
The W C T U of Allegheny county in Pittsburg set next Tuesday as a day of prayer for the election. Prayer meetings will be held in city churches with a member praying at each hour the polls are open that right may triumph throughout the State.
Subscribers of New England Telephone and Telegraph will not be required to switch to the new rate schedule for at least until November 1 1911. The Massachusetts Highway Commission recommended the postponement and the company will decide.
Spellbinders of both parties toured nearly every town in the state last night. Congressman Eugene N. Foss and Governor Eben S. Draper issued statements claiming victory and vowed to push the campaign vigorously for the next three days. Foss critiqued Republicans for neglecting the campaign issue of high costs on the Salem stump.
Governor Draper blasted the Democratic campaign as headlines and bluster and predicted a substantial plurality. Foss claimed a 25,000 Boston plurality would repeat statewide while Guild attacked Foss over corporation ties. Foss accused Draper of dodging the issue and asked Lodge to explain woolen tariff votes as large rallies support the state ticket.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for Thursday clearing and somewhat colder conditions. Friday will be fair and colder with generally westerly winds.
Harvard teams endure a hard afternoon session while Yale fields a stronger backfield. Dartmouth benefits from a new line, as star McLetchie Melrose suffers a broken collarbone. The Andover Exeter game Saturday is expected to draw a big crowd. A six day cycle race sees a five way tie.
Brighton police identify Henry T Mee gan aged 22 and Walter C Mee gan aged 16 as the two highwaymen who assaulted and robbed women in the Brighton area. The suspects were captured after a plan by Captain Sullivan of the Brighton station, aided by victims who helped police chase the culprits.
Patrolman Joseph Mattey patrolled the boat area near the camp where the Meegan boys and workers employed by their father reside yesterday, continuing surveillance around the site.
Miss Blanche Craig 19 of Boston was thrown 30 feet when a runaway auto crashed into a telephone pole guy wire on the South Middleboro State highway. She suffered a dislocated hip, a broken right leg, and four gashes on her forehead and was taken to J. L. Benson’s home for treatment. Carl Lawson of Brighton, who rode with her, fractured his ankle jumping from the car. Both were returning from Emmons summer home at Falmouth to Boston.
Francis W. Preston once a Newton Centre post office clerk marries Catherine Murray after his acquittal by a United States District Court jury. The arrest last August on embezzlement charges delayed the ceremony. the jury disagreed on the first two counts but acquitted on the third.
In Chicago police clashed with several thousand garment workers as Inspector K Healey led about sixty officers to disperse rioters. One officer was stabbed, fifteen rioters seriously injured, and 25 strikers and sympathizers were arrested during the confrontation amid the ongoing garment workers' strike.
John Morgan a waiter at Hotel Lenox was robbed of $10 a stickpin a silver watch a hat and a raincoat by two Black men at 1 am in front of 19 Dun dee street Morgan identified one suspect as William James of 36 Yarmouth street after Patrolman Linehan pursued the robbers following the alarm.
Testimony in a double divorce case centers on letters attributed to Henry H. Love a State street broker. The letters describe emotional conflict and urge confidence in Love and his associate C F King while hinting at personal and business pressures. Page 2-First Column.
