Havana reports say the steamship City of Alexandria, an 2480 ton iron screw vessel of New York & Cuba Mall Steamship Co, burned after an explosion off Cojimar while bound for New York. Initially reported drowned rose to thirty four or thirty five. nineteen survivors reached port, many others believed ashore. Captain Hofman led the ship. purser R. Bowen listed missing. Names of survivors include Hoffman, McGee, Jennings, Donahue, and many others.
Washington dispatch reports a Friday forecast for New England with general fair conditions earlier, then increasing cloudiness in the afternoon or evening, possible eight local showers, followed by colder air as west winds arrive Friday night and colder Saturday. The report emphasizes temperature drop and unsettled conditions into the weekend.
The Cunard steamer Campania, sailing from New York, passed Brow Head at 11:05 p m on November 2. The journey time was five days and ten and a half hours, beating all previous crossings. It set a new record for the eastern voyage, surpassing the October 21 time.
A boiler exploded in the stables at Fourteenth Street and Avenue B in New York, collapsing the building and killing three men instantly with nearly a score injured, two later dying. Mrs Strickland No 2 confronts him with public shame as authorities and townspeople react. The case traces Strickland’s unsanctioned path from insurance salesman to pulpit denounced in a series of alarming revelations.
