Washington May 30 General Miles and his staff along with thirty four persons depart for Tampa on a special Southern railway train. In other dispatches a report notes Twenty five transports carrying an army of thirty thousand men and a British steamer loaded with coal captured near Cervera.
Linton wins his first race against Harry Elkes in a fast two man middle distance clash at Charles River Park. Pacemaking by both sides shook the riders but Linton rode a bold finish while McDuffee and Hoyt, Vernier, and others won their events at Philadelphia and Waltham. The Massachusetts spring meet drew many notables as Cambridge, Boston, and Worcester clubs contested heats and finals amid spills and strong sprints.
Washington advices to the Evening Journal say orders were issued this morning to add 8000 men under Major General Merritt, increasing the Department of the Pacific strength to 20,000 troops.
Lord Lyon Playfair, noted chemist and reformer, died in London aged 79. Born 1819 in Bengal, he taught chemistry at Manchester and served as sanitary commissioner. As MP for Edinburgh and St Andrews, he championed technical education and influenced English educational progress. He married three times, last to Edith Russell.
Special to The Post reports that President ordered the Cuba invasion after Commodore Schley's cables, with General Miles notifying General Shafter at Tampa at 1 AM. 15,000 to 20,000 troops headed for transport. by evening 30,000 aboard. Four trips planned across the straits to land 30,000 men.
