American fleet bombs Santiago de Cuba harbor forts

On May 31 a American squadron led by Rear Admiral Sampson bombarded the harbor forts at Santiago de Cuba. The attack targeted Morro Castle La Socapa and Punta Gorda while the town largely escaped damage. Firing ceased after about 1.5 hours with unspecified Spanish casualties.
