Canal bill opposition voiced by Mellen in Washington

President Charles S. Mellen of the New York New Haven Hartford railroad told a Senate committee that the Panama canal bill in its present form would strike at New England's transportation system and harm its business interests. He argued against banning railroad owned ships from using the canal and said railroads control several steamship lines to ensure low rates and fast service to Southern ports for New England manufacturers.

Mellen Warns New England Railroads Face Legal Risk

Mr Mellen called New England a great railroad terminal claiming 8000 miles of tracks. He cited steamship lines owned by the New Haven such as Merchants and Miners not under railroad control due to a 25 year trust. He argued the line was acquired during C W Morse’s coastwise expansion as protection and warned against continuing to own many lines to avoid heavy penalties.
