Foss warns that utilities will veto railroad bills while Lena Cusumano remains in Charlestown death cell. Three female guards begin an eight hour death watch as the condemned woman awaits life or the electric chair. Cusumano speaks calmly to her lawyer amid mounting tension in the death chamber.
Governor Foss told the Post he would veto pending railroad measures unless a public utilities commission is created to enforce railroad laws. He reiterated in a message to the Legislature that no railroad concessions will pass without such a commission. He denounced the western trolley merger bill as class legislation and pushed for action to improve service for the people.
The governor vows to push legislation to restrain rail, telephone, and telegraph companies and improve service. He urges electrification of all railroads in Greater Boston and a four track tunnel linking the New Haven and Boston and Maine lines, arguing the public deserves modern, safe transit.
Mrs Cusumano was brought to Charlestown Prison early yesterday morning despite Sheriff Henry F Porter saying she would not be moved until Saturday.
Fire swept cottages on Apple Island after being discovered at about 3 a m by an officer at Wood Island Park. Police were alerted through East Boston and headquarters, with emergency crews responding to control the blaze.

Boston citizens and G A R veterans honored Civil War dead with Memorial Day ceremonies. Thousands of graves bore wreaths and garlands as school children scattered flowers into Dorchester Bay. A black-clad woman dedicated a bouquet to Titanic disaster victims, likely a relative.
Cold gray skies and showers marred outdoor exercises as graves at Mt. Auburn received flowers for notable dead including General Samuel Lawrence and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. George Hill of Charles Ward Post No. 62 suffered a fainting shock during a march near Newton Centre and was taken home by car.
