Cass Opposes Wilmot Proviso and Supports Territorial Self Rule
In December 1847 Gen. Cass expressed strong opposition to the Wilmot Proviso and to federal interference in territorial domestic relations. He urged letting residents decide their own policies and framed Congress as lacking power over slavery in territories. The Ohio Democratic state convention endorsed Cass for President on January 8, 1848. Michigan also nominated him unanimously. Pennsylvania lauded him as a leading Democrat fit for the times. The Albany Argus notes Gen. Butler as Democratic Vice Presidential contender, praising his revolutionary lineage and frontier leadership.
