The President today vetoed five private pension bills. Three originated in the House and two in the Senate. The measures would have provided relief for J. D. Haworth, Rebecca Eldridge, Annie C. Owen, Eleanor C. Bangham, and Simmons W. Harden.

Charles Bailey a seventeen year old pupil died in Woodbridge after a confrontation with teacher Harry L Elliot who claimed self defense. Bailey and a masked companion had planned to assault the teacher but Elliot struck Bailey with a club after being attacked. Bailey died hours later. Coroner Mix investigated and no arrest had been made. Elliot, age 20, is described as well connected as a son of Deacon Elliot of North Haven.
Eugene S. Taylor, the Deerfield child poisoner, was examined in Greenfield Mass and ordered held for the August grand jury on murder charges. Sixteen witnesses testified for the Commonwealth. defense plans insanity as a plea though no motive or mental illness was proven.
Falmouth in Barnstable county prepares for June 15 200th anniversary of incorporation on June 4 1686. History notes Succanesset tract origin and early settlers from Barnstable and Sandwich. General John L Swift a native of Falmouth will give the principal address in a mammoth tent.
Clayton Field of Fairfax drowned while fishing near St. Albans Vermont. A companion who heard his cry attempted a rescue and was himself swept into the water before saving Field's life. both men were involved in a fatal fishing incident.
In New Bedford on May 28 Eugene Sullivan aged 14 suffered severe burns when four red hot wires pierced his legs while he fed rolls at the Gosnold mills.

John R Bartlett longtime Rhode Island secretary of state and author of works on ethnology and Rhode Island history died at his Providence home. He helped found the American Ethnological Society and served as secretary of the New York Historical Society. Bartlett also directed the John Carter Brown Library.
