Reports from Kinchou near Harbin claim Japanese losses reach 12,000 killed in the ongoing fighting. The figures are said to be confirmed by alleged official state sources amid heavy advances and counteractions in the area.
May 27 reports say a lightning bolt struck the Horace Mann School in Everett, stunning teacher Miss Elma Clark and causing debris to fall in a corridor. About 50 children gathered in outer corridors fled as bricks and slate rained, with no injuries. A second bolt damaged a house on 38 Oliver Street, tore a rear car casing, and felled a large tree on Autumn Street, wounding two women in a kitchen but causing no further damage.
In Epsom New Hampshire May 27 vigilantes search for Ed ward Witham accused of brutal assault on his 13 year old cousin Alice Witham. The girl’s condition worsens doctors fear she cannot survive the night as farmers deputies and townspeople cordon off territory and consider a reward. Relatives of the victim demand Witham’s death while police continue the manhunt without success.

A fire in Fairville St John New Brunswick destroyed five houses and four stables, with total losses around 8000 dollars and insurance coverage. Looting began as flames spread, police failed to halt crowds, special constables were sworn in, saloons closed, and thieves were dispersed.
A stranger from Hartford attempted to shoot William G Gorton while he rowed in a choppy Rhode Island bay. In a struggle over a revolver the man and Gorton’s young brother fell overboard. The elder Gorton was shot in the head from the water as the stranger sank after raising his hands. Pressly, the stranger, sought morphine in Providence after the incident.
Simon Alexander told the Boston Board of Selectmen that funds from summer amusements at Revere Beach kept many children from starving last winter. Clergymen and Law and Order League members urged against Sunday amusement permits. Rev Bixby, Rev Burbank, Rev Horner and others spoke. No decision was reached and the matter was taken under advisement.
Angeles May 27. By a decisive 441 to 188 vote the Methodist general conference today decided not to change church discipline regarding prohibited amusements.

New York May 27 A majority of the Marine Firemen’s Union executive board met to discuss the strike situation and stated that unless the New Haven and Hartford Railroad accepted terms offered by President Curran of freight handlers a sympathetic strike would be called by marine firemen here and east of here Two board members were still to arrive and action depended on them Delegate Mahoney of Boston said he could mobilize 500 men in Boston within five minutes to shut down shipping in Boston Harbor.
Railroad officials announced the Fall River line now accepts all freight except perishables, opening the Boston to New York route to unrestricted freight traffic by rail and boat.
