Beer Heist Targeted Charlestown Stable Theft

Police arrested William Hil lock 21 Joseph Ray 28 and Andrew Brown 43 at about 10 PM for breaking and entering and larceny after they attempted to seize two half barrels of lager beer from Samuel B Stackpole’s stable on Freedom court Charlestown. All three are held on the charges.

The city mission ary reported to Park Street Church on the year’s work. He cited 270000 nominal Protestants in a 576000 city population and church attendance averaging 60000 to 98000, less than half of potential. Twenty two missionaries work in the city making about 180 calls daily.

Irish Invincibles barred from landing at Ellis Island

New York May 27 James Fitzharris alias Skin the Goat and Joseph Mullett two surviving Irish Invincibles recently freed in Ireland for the Phenix Park murders were ordered excluded by the board of special inquiry at Ellis Island and deported. The men, pardoned by Earl Cadogan, faced a secret inquisition and were sent to the excluded pen awaiting possible appeal to Washington. Fitzharris admitted a life sentence for treason and said he came to seek rest while Mullett protested mistreatment by the government.

Pushy New York Doctor Sparks Beach Fence Clash

Beverly May 27 Two arrests were made for assault and battery after Dr John Miller Masury of New York and his staff clashed with summer residents over a sea front barrier. A barb wire fence blocked beach access from high water to low water marks prompting police action and warrants. The dispute drew wide local interest as court dates approach to June 2.

Shore path rights spark clashes over estate fences

Ed ward Morse and Hervey Patch joined the shore walk near Magee, after a long dispute over access to the beach path. Wealthy cottagers challenged townspeople using the shore line, with Dr Masury patrolling his estate to bar passage. The issue dates back to John Stetson erecting a fence to high water mark before the town allowed pedestrian access along the shore.

The Leyland liner Cestrian, under Captain Thomas, reached East Boston pier at 10 am after rough weather. Pilot Louis Smith boarded 300 miles east of Boston. The tug Marguerite will haul mudscows to Little Harbor for dredging. A north Shore excursion steamer may launch this summer for Misery Island. A 1,000-passenger vessel to operate from Commercial Wharf is anticipated. The Wideawake wrecking lighter joined Betts Bros. fleet. A new Iberian liner, to be captained by Farrington, will commence June 27 sailing from Liverpool to New York, joining other liners.
