Total solar eclipse visible across North America today

For the first time in years a total solar eclipse will be seen in North America with a narrow belt from near New Orleans to Norfolk Virginia delivering less than two minutes of totality at any location. Partial visibility will cover most of the continent while Boston and New England see only a partial eclipse. Observers report rapid shadow movement across the sun due to the Moon’s fast orbital velocity and the Earth’s rotation. Astronomers have prepared expeditions and stations across the eclipse path for photographic and spectroscopic work as the shadow traverses from New Orleans to Norfolk and beyond into the Atlantic, Portugal, Spain, Egypt, and the Red Sea.
