A massive fire on May 27 in Manhattan's West Side Belt Line stables and nearby properties incinerated 1400 horses, 1500 stalls, and a silk factory. Losses top 1.8 million dollars, with 40 horses saved, hundreds of tenants displaced, and extensive damage to frame buildings and several tenements. Insurance coverage uncertain, but claimed recoveries total about half a million.
