Washington reports reveal W W Ker testimony that star route prosecutions were aimed at shielding criminals. Bliss allegedly blocked full indictments and coerced witnesses while Merrick complained, with detailed trial counts and witness lists cited. Senate moves on Alabama Claims Court and Mexican Pension Bill also noted.
Two Fitchburg trains collided near Ewing depot Monday morning, engines thrown from track and three cars derailed. No passengers injured. At Billerica town meeting Monday, voters approved raising 20 000 to aid Boston and Lowell railroad in building a branch from Billerica Centre to Bedford, with construction to start at once. A Wakefield rattan works foreman, unnamed, was badly injured when a falling stone crushed his leg and he was taken home to Danvers. Fitchburg plans for a new library building were adopted, a pressed brick two story structure with sandstone trim, 74 feet front and 60 feet deep, plus rear projection for private staircase and elevator. John Gaddis, acquitted of setting fire to Victoria mills cotton store, has sued for 25 000 for malicious prosecution against several mill owners and officials.

A fully attended meeting of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company was held at the armory Faneuil Hall Monday evening with Maj. George S. Merrill presiding. Arrangements for the 246th anniversary in June were completed. N S Wilbur elected finance committee member for five years. John B Balbcock elected board of trustees member for five years. Merrill reappointed for one year. Maj Ben Perley Poore elected to committee on military museum and library for five years.

The Penn bank in Pittsburg closes again at noon after president and CEO Mr. Riddle falls seriously ill. Directors refuse interviews as crowds gather outside and a run on the bank erodes funds. authorities report substantial certified checks and loans from other banks to ride out liabilities.
George Emerson Lowell son of Hon John Lowell of Chestnut Hill Mass was found dead in his Buffalo bed with a pistol nearby after periods of melancholy. He was 21, Harvard College graduate, taught at Pennell's private school since September, and planned to enter Harvard Law School this fall. Burial will be from Chestnut Hill home.
Terrible damage spreads from Galveston to Trinity region after days of constant rain. Trinity river rises at one inch per hour, cutting the Trinity and Sabine line since May 20. Indianola and Great Northern work halted. bridges over the river expand to over a mile and a half in width. Families flee, crops and stock suffer, and officials warn the worst is yet to come.
Plymouth New Hampshire May 26 annual meeting of the Boston Concord and Montreal railroad elected J Thomas Vose of Boston Peter Butler of Boston Samuel N Bell of Manchester Warren F Daniell of Franklin Nathan H Weeks of Plymouth George W Hills of Lawrence Mass and Charles H Greenleaf of Franconia as directors Seven thousand seven hundred forty four shares voted Hills and Greenleaf new. Reports denied lease talks. Board organized with Vose president Bell vice president and Harlow treasurer. Other roads named similar boards with Vose repeatedly chosen as president and Bell as clerk.
In New York on May 26 Stephen F. Moriarty partner of Jesse Grant appeared for examination in supplementary proceedings in the suit by H. H. Remington who holds a default judgment on a 5000 dollar note. Case adjourned with talk of settling claims before next court session. Also reported: John Carpenter, an ex convict, killed his wife this afternoon after attempting to harm his sister in law Delia Ambrose who is badly hurt and possibly fatally wounded. The body of Charles F. Haller of Providence Rhode Island, who died by his own hand on the Narragansett, was found on Wards Island and sent to the morgue.
The naval board at Newport finished eight days of speed and turning tests on the Nina with ordinary steering gear. In today’s sessions the ship could not be controlled while turning astern or while moving straight astern, even with two on the bridge and ten on deck. The Nina will sail to New York tomorrow to be fitted with a Kunstadtter screw at Brooklyn Navy Yard, then return for further trials with the new device.
The New York papers report James D. Fish, former Marine Bank president, charging Gen. Ulysses S. Grant with involvement in government contract profits tied to the Grant & Ward firm. Fish cites two Grant letters, one autographed, asserting contracts were proper and profits genuine, prompting scrutiny of Grant and Ward's partners.

Secretary Seamans of the National Millers Association reports on the wheat crop condition comparing it with last year. Based on 3000 inquiry replies, the outlook is very promising with yield expected to approximate 1882 levels if no unforeseen misfortune occurs.
The report shows expenditures of 13214 76 with 165 36 in cash on hand. Concert losses totaled 1749 54, last year net debt 601 83, this year 2324 64. After debate the board ratified remittance actions but barred future similar measures. Officers elected: President Chas C Perkins, VP George H Chicker ing, Treasurer M Grant Daniels, Secretary Eugene B Hagar, Librarian Francis H Jenks. Directors include H P Blackman and others.
