Woburn police seized $10,400 in gold pieces and valuables from a gypsy camp on the outskirts of the city while investigating a complaint that the gypsy queen robbed Stephen Johnson of Whitman of $9,100.
Macia Mock, 35, a widow with five children at the camp, is accused of theft. The accuser, John son, also a widower with five children, is a member of the gypsy group.
Arrival in England of the Harvard Medical School unit known as the Red Cross Hospital No. 5 was announced. Commanded by Major Robert A. Patterson with Dr. Harvey Cushing as director, it is second of six base hospitals to reach France. The staff includes about twenty surgeons and physicians, 60 nurses, and 150 enlisted Army Medical Corps men.
Washington May 22 The House Republican caucus rejects any newspaper censorship in the espionage bill. President Wilson writes to Chairman Webb urging Congress to grant censorship to observe patriotic reticence about publishable information.
The President asserts that congressional censorship authority over the press remains necessary amid war, refuting reports that it was abandoned. Senate opposition to censorship complicates conference talks on the espionage bill as Representative Webb prepares a last minute push to preserve the House amendment.
A massive fire destroyed all public buildings and 3500 houses in Yonezawa, a key town in Yamagata Prefecture with about 36 000 residents, according to reports from Tokio dated May 22.
Men aged 21 to 30 who are ill and must register on June 5 under the military draft act may register through agents. The directive comes from Charles F. Gettemy Massachusetts director of registration in a letter to state city and town clerks.
Director Gettemy notes that city and town clerks may issue registration cards for sick individuals and may deputize registrants to act as agents for the sick. Four Russian naval officers and a civilian arrived in New York on May 22, asserting they represent the new Russian government. Lt Leon Kagernikoff Lt Nikola Pechkoff Sub-Lt Andre Mizura and Vladimir Illiaschenko said they are on a special mission they would not discuss. They planned to stay in New York for some time before proceeding to Washington after prior duties in England and France.
Representatives of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company testified before the Public Service Commission that clergymen charitable associations and Y M C A s receive reduced telephone rates while all others pay the full rate.
During the hearing it was stated that state and city officials pay reduced rates for telephones, towns outside the Metropolitan district receive free portions, while towns in the district pay all costs at a reduced rate. Company officials claimed cash contributions are made to organizations by cutting their phone bills.

A early morning blaze in a five story building at 3 Park Street caused heavy smoke and water damage estimated at 20000 dollars. Rand & Crane jewelers Notman Photographic Co and other tenants suffered losses while fire crews used new smoke masks during the fight. The blaze also damaged the basement of 4 Park Street where Zinns florist and Houghton Mifflin Co were located.
