In a furious series of attacks along the Verdun front the French force German positions back, inflicting heavy losses and capturing large numbers of prisoners. The move by Joffre is described as sudden and unexpected, erasing recent German gains.
New York May 22 The Waite murder trial jury was selected in six hours with 12 jurors chosen. District Attorney Swann opened for the prosecution and Dr Arthur Warren Waite faced cross examination as the case moves toward a verdict and possible death sentence.
Waite showed surprising calm as a central figure in the courtroom. Clean shaven and neatly dressed in a blue serge suit, he watched testimonies with a polite smile and even laughed at a talesman’s remark about capital punishment.
Mrs Samuel W McCall wife of the Governor who had been seriously ill at her Winchester home is now nearly recovered and yesterday spent several hours outdoors marking a notable improvement in health.
Reported results show Boston beating Detroit 2 1 and St Louis defeating New York 9 5 while Washington shut out Chicago 0. Philadelphia rolled over Cleveland 10 x and Boston 8 beat St Louis 5 in another National league matchup. Wet grounds affected New York Cincinnati games as rain and wet field conditions interrupted play across the region. New Haven Hartford 1 Worcester Springfield 2 Lawrence 5 Portland 4 Lynn 5 Lowell 2 in eastern standings.
Governor Whitman sends wire saying he cannot attend the parade but supports the demonstration. Lawyers and press are invited to join the parade with their respective associations. Flags are urged to fly all week as Major Higgison calls citizens to participate. A grandstand will be built for G A R veterans and a complete marshal aids list is announced. United States marshals and county officials are involved.
Deputy sheriffs court officers constables and probation officers will march under Charles K Darling as referee in bankruptcy. Cambridge plans 10000 to 20000 marchers joining the Preparedness Parade on Saturday. A large student and community turnout will mobilize from the Charles River Esplanade to the bridge. Cambridge officials and Mayor Rockwood led a citywide push with schools to serve as recruiting stations for students and residents.
Roosevelt addressed a Roosevelt Republican committee delegation at Oyster Bay urging that any man not pledging Americanism is against it. He said public servants should be judged by this standard and criticized vague pledges of preparedness. The committee of 24 nodded in agreement and applauded.
Colonel Roosevelt delivers a prepared address to a committee gathered in the trophy room at his home. The visitors include five prominent Oyster Bay citizens who join a semi circle formed after marching into the house.
A Myron Clark love letter to Hazel Aylsworth helped bind him over for the grand jury on inducing the 20 year old East Weymouth girl to leave home. The note dated to a plan to marry after flight from Weymouth and follow her to Paris Illinois where the girl had not yet arrived. The 24 page notebook letter and its author’s intent are key evidence cited by Weymouth police and the Quincy Court.
Patrick J. Lawless city employee collapsed on Lenox street after leaving St. Philip's Church. Two priests gave last rites on the sidewalk before he died at City Hospital. Lawless, married, of 599 Shawmut avenue, attended services with Patrick Fitzpatrick. death due to natural causes.
On May 22 at Verdun the French launched a furious series of assaults east and west of the Meuse and on the Meuse heights. German lines crumbled, wiping away weeks of gains and threatening Dead Man's Hill and Hill 304 as the French achieved a startling breakthrough.
French troops pushed west and east of Fort Douaumont near Verdun and penetrated the village of Baumont as they begin to envelop the fort. Reports state a large number of prisoners were taken and the fort may be recaptured or isolated amid the advance.
Joseph C. Grew secretary of the American embassy at Berlin traveled on the Danish steamer Frederick VIII which docked at Quarantine tonight from Copenhagen and Christiana. He refused to discuss his mission saying he would go to Boston. The ship carried 507 bags of mail retained by authorities and 1 138 total passengers.
Colorado Year notes a Rocky Mountain Limited ad for Superior Service with low fares. It directs readers to Rock Island Travel Bureau at 33 Old South Building in Boston for information.
Joseph J. Ettor the I W W strike leader says he will return to Lawrence to seek warrants for the arrest of Lawrence police officers involved in his early morning dash to Boston. He will call on Judge Mahoney at 9 o'clock to obtain warrants for the officers.
Etter states he was woken at 5 am by four men who posed as police, forced dressed, and escorted him from the Hotel Needham to an awaiting auto. He identified Inspector Charles Vose as one of the officers, denied a warrant, and says he was taken to the South station and told to travel to New York.
Washington May 22 The new note to Great Britain protesting interference with American mails was laid before President Wilson and will likely be sent to London tomorrow The note condemns British detentions and examinations of mail ships in British ports and states the United States cannot consent to the policy The language blends State Department drafting with President Wilson's additions
