On May 22 in Tokio reports say the Russian battleship at port Arthur suffered a sinking at her mooring after valves were opened amid a suspected traitor. A prior port Arthur reconnaissance by Admiral Togo last Friday noted a shell hit the torpedo boat destroyer Akatsuki, causing one officer and 24 men to be killed.
Panic spread among passengers when an open switch triggered a collision and fuse blow, adding to theday’s commotion. Injured include Mrs Theresa McDonald of 750 Broadway with abdominal injuries and shock. Max Pfeffer of Rockland Street East Dedham with four broken ribs and insensibility. Motorman John H Griffin Jr of 55 Fayette Street with a bruised left foot. Miss Hannah C Dooley of 28 West Fifth Street South Boston with concussion and delirium, Miss Katie Donovan of 591 Bridge Street Dedham with facial and back injuries. Richard Koett of 97 James Street with chest injuries. Albert Coss of 45 Metropolitan Avenue Roslindale with a broken ankle. Mrs Henry Schumacher of 922 Massachusetts Avenue Arlington with insensibility and shock. Mrs Elizabeth Geist of 8 Rockland. Continued on Page 9 Fifth Columns.
The battleship Orel, brought to Kronstadt for finishing touches, sank at her anchorage on May 20. She was raised and found undamaged. valves at Kings ton were opened allowing water in. A theory of treachery is under investigation.
St. Petersburg correspondent reports Viceroy Alexieff submitted his resignation to the Emperor citing ill health, but the Emperor sent a gracious telegram and urged him to remain at his post. Other war news continued on page 2.
In Westfield on May 22 James E. Condron a 52 year old mason tender was shot and killed by his 15 year old son James A. Condron at home after an intoxicated fight with the wife. The youth using a rifle aimed to frighten his father and the shot struck him in the back causing fatal internal hemorrhage. The boy a student at the Normal Training School is held on a manslaughter charge.
Armand Stack of 70 Willow Street Cambridge reports a new Boston swindle after answering a work advert. A man came May 20 offering book sales work and later asked for car fare. The conman claimed to know a railroad book seller in Harvard Square and misled Stack into paying $10 before vanishing, leaving Stack humiliated.
Police raided two North End gambling resorts at 13 Fleet Street and 56 Prince Street capturing eight men for gaming and charging five more as present where gaming was in progress.
An explosion in two drying rooms at the Lake Shore Novelty Company plant in Findlay Ohio kills seven workers and injures many others. Two employees are missing and presumed blown to atoms as two magazines explode simultaneously. The plant, covering about ten acres, employed nearly 200 people and produced railroad torpedoes and Fourth of July explosives. The blast and debris shattered walls and sent bricks and timber across a wide area.
Rome May 22 Vatican authorities remain agitated over the conflict with the French government tied to President Loubet’s Rome visit and the recall of French ambassador Nisard. The Pope led mass with 64 attendees and spent the day studying clippings on the dispute as Monaco’s role in the leak draws attention.
Under revived Blue Law enforcement Judge Emmons halted Sunday fruit sales across many shops and tied up on premises sales. Police warned sellers as owners covered fruit or redirected to cigars and soda. South End shops along Tre mont Washington from Dover to Northampton bore the impact with protests and plans for a fruit dealer association and fundraising.
Dean George Hodges of the Episcopal Theological School Cambridge told St Stephen's Church on Florence Street last evening that labor unions seek better housing higher wages and shorter hours and that the church and unions stand together. He warned that corporations blocking organization threaten the community and urged harmony between church and union in shared purpose.
Maurice E. Foster, patient at Pierce Farm West Roxbury, escaped during a ward absence and fled to his home on King Street. He attacked his wife and a passerby, John Quinn, until police overpowered him and returned him to the asylum. A prior escape occurred a year earlier with a suicide attempt in the Charles River.

Captors Raisuli and bandits demand vast ransom, troop withdrawal, release of prisoners, and removal of Tangier’s Basha. U S forces mobilize Atlantic squadron under Admiral Chadwick and European squadron under Rear Admiral Jewell to Tangier, with Britain deploying its Gibraltar squadron.

A late night chase in Charlestown ended with the arrest of James J. Geary of 2 Fred street on charges of breaking and entering the liquor store of William T. Patton at 556 Main street. Geary was captured after a patrolman spied the trio fleeing the alley. two companions escaped.
A fire at the Ulster County Poorhouse near New Paltz, Kingston, destroyed the facility this afternoon. Three inmates are missing believed burned. The loss is estimated at 50000 dollars.
In New York on May 22 a panic broke out as three passenger coaches on the New York New Haven and Hartford line at Mott Haven were ripped by a locomotive while a switch was made. Engineer James Burns jumped and may not recover as the train moved slowly and the coupling broke crossing the switch.
Willie Trueger, three year old son of Frank Trueger, drowned in Exeter River after falling overboard from a boat as he played near Exeter Depot New Hampshire on May 22.
