Boston's summer entertainment begins with a Music Hall concert on Wednesday evening May 23 1888. Promoters tout fashionable attire including Henry I and Wilson B hats plus imported English Serge Suits, urging patrons to dress well for the opening night and enjoy a premier social event.
Fire swept the Old Colony freight sheds at the steamboat docks destroying two wooden cotton sheds and about 950 bales. Loss likely over 20000 dollars with several mills listed as owners. Some lot books were lost, ownership unclear. Separate reports from Philadelphia and Pittsfield note Belmont Iron Works fire at Forty second street causing about 70000 in building and 10000 in stock loss, insured. Jericho Mill Hinsdale burned late last night, incendiary suspected, loss around 30000 insured.
William O'Brien of 284 Fourth Street South Boston reports he was assaulted by two men on Harrison Avenue near the Broadway extension Monday night. After beating him they threw him into a cellar, where he was found around noon yesterday and taken home. Dr Lane ordered his removal to the City Hospital.

Portland May 22 Democrats here show strong support for Mr. Putnam nominee for Governor. The Augusta convention praised his capacity and leadership, saying he would reflect well on Maine and the party. Delegates to St Louis and presidential electors are seen as a party favorite.

Ex-Governor Throckmorton served as temporary chairman and the convention supports Cleveland. The platform endorses Cleveland favors the Mills bill seeks removal of Mexico United States commerce restrictions and opposes further Texas prohibition agitation.
In Denver stockholders ratified a joint-use agreement with Rock Island Railroad for lines between Pueblo and Denver. They authorized a new improvement mortgage at 5000 per mile and issued 3,000,000 in bonds for property improvements by a near unanimous vote of 535,730 to 10.
