The Morgan Resolution for belligerent rights wins Senate approval by 41 to 14. Four populists join eighteen Republicans and nineteen Democrats in support. twelve Republicans and two Democrats vote against. Senator Thurston recalls the St Louis convention scene.
The Morgan resolution on Cuba states a state of public war exists between Spain and the Cuban Provisional Government. It calls for the United States to maintain strict neutrality while preserving belligerent rights in U S ports and territory.
The Senate voted 41 to 14 to recognize the belligerent rights of Cuban patriots, edging the nation toward possible war with Spain. Debate featured Senators Thurston Elkins White Fairbanks Hale and Gorman as the chamber weighed war versus diplomacy ahead of House action and McKinley’s next move.
In Taunton on May 20 several claimants appeared as relatives of the late Fannie F Richardson the recluse who died yesterday. Claims include George W Carleton of Providence Isaac H Carleton of New Hampshire and James Richardson of Taunton as nephews and half brother. Funeral held at an undertaker’s room conducted by Rev B I Simon of Grace M E Church. twenty two present. Unclear will existence may trigger court contests with estate possibly reaching fifty thousand dollars or more.
A pair of blazes in Hoboken N J cause heavy damage. One factory complex and 14 double apartment blocks burn. 140 families lose homes while police and fire crews struggle to control the flames. The Hoboken Land and Improvement Company suffered insured losses.
James Co. Bell a Baltimore area millionaire died suddenly last night at his Livingston manor estate in Johnstown Columbia County He was 83 years old and owned a fine estate at Mewingo near Baltimore.

New York May 20 A sweeping tailors strike gathers in the garment district as Abraham Cohen of 220 Rust Broadway agrees to a 20 percent wage increase and a nine hour day. Schoenfeld estimates 18 000 to 20 000 case makers on strike with 250 workers affected.
May 20 1924 Herman Thal a cap factory employee was reproved for drinking this afternoon. After the rebuke he drank with other employees then fell into a balance conveying to a hospital.
Samuel Levine of 16 Minot Street West End tried to slash his throat in Franklin Park last evening. He was found bleeding and unconscious near the Walnut Avenue gate and later confessed to slashing his throat and committing self harm after initially giving a false tale to police. He was taken to City Hospital where his life was not considered immediately in danger.
Captain John D. Hart once linked to Cuban filibustering and convicted of neutrality law violations offers the steamer Laurada to the U S government. Hart says the Laurada has been tendered through Senator Gray of Delaware for carrying supplies to American citizens in Cuba.
In Lowell on May 2 the Superior Court heard Mrs. Mitchell's divorce suit against F G Mitchell once the defendant did not contest. The press focused on his alleged intoxication while she sought custody of their children and discussed possible alimony at the absolute divorce hearing.
Simon Banks a 67 year old shipowner and farmer in Southport Conn dropped dead early today after firing a shotgun at a cat. He had a history of heart disease.
Missing Boylston National Bank messenger Albert M King traveled from Boston to Lowell then Concord before vanishing. Police trace shows he carried $30,000, used mileage books, and may have aimed for White River Junction or Montreal. Chief Watts fled the city while investigators pursue leads across New England.
