Test for Adulteration of Lards Promises Quick Detection
A Science correspondent reports a simple lard test from the Agricultural Department to detect cottonseed oil adulteration. Place lard in a teacup, add sulphuric acid, then a second portion after half a minute, and observe color changes in the fatty layer in a test tube. Pure lard yields a light sponge color fading to cinnamon, adulterated lard darkens immediately to brown. the method is inexpensive and portable.
