The British Foreign Arbitration Society presented an illuminated address to Mr Chamberlain praising his role in the Canada United States fisheries dispute settlement. Signers include Lord Tennyson the Bishop of London Lord Derby and Lord Hartington among many others from various parties.
Berun May 18 Emperor Frederick remained in the park from five to seven thirty PM and rode in a pony carriage. Doctors held an evening consultation in the tent. If his improvement continues he will go to Potsdam after Prince Henry's wedding and to Hamburg in July. Virchow reports the spatula examination shows no cancerous disease.
May 18. Sr. Peterspurc reports the Russian government learned Austria planned to remove Count Wolkenstein Trostburg and leave the embassy to a chargé d affaires. Kalnoky replied Wolkenstein Trostburg would stay, and Russia warned Vienna of reprisals through recall of Prince Lobanoff Rostovski.

A series of fires across South Boston and Charlestown damaged buildings and stock. Adams Bros. warehouse at 134 Tudor Street suffered major losses, with insured amounts totaling about 4700 and stock losses estimated up to 10000. Separate blazes hit a Tremont House laundry dry room, a tenement at 5 Kenney Place, and a boarding house at 11 Boylston Place, with varying insured amounts. The Mississippi flood reaches a record 19 feet 9 inches, second only to 1851, inundating Quincy and surrounding levees. Over 100 miles of protection border 200000 acres of prime farmland while washes break through Indian Grove levee, destroying winter wheat and forcing mass evacuations as cattle, homes, and rail lines are imperiled. Destruction spans farms, warehouses, and factories along the river, with roads underwater and transport crippled.
About fifty Republicans met at Field building Dorchester to organize a Dorchester Republican Club of Boston and select five delegates to the State League convention on May 22. William H. West was elected president with officers and an executive committee named. The club will meet Fridays and pledge to back the regular Republican nominee after nominations.
Harriet Pierpoint of Maplewood, reportedly worth 20000 dollars, was found by the board of health living in an old house in near destitute condition. She answered the health superintendent wearing a worn skirt and a man’s undershirt, with matted hair and a dirt-covered face. The floor was filthy and hens and dogs roamed about. She is barred from riding horse cars and authorities debate her future since she is a taxpayer and cannot be sent to the almshouse.
Philadelphia May 18 Delia L S Parnell mother of Charles Stewart Parnell is sued by Mrs Mary R Stewart and Charlotte Smith's estate to recover about 7500 dollars allegedly misused by her for investment and unreturned she is said to be in London awaiting outcome of the suit
B F Jones, Republican National Committee chair, says Blaine has not named a residuary heir or shown a preference among candidates. He expects the party to decide, notes Blaine would resist a January nomination if he withdraws, and confirms no letters from Blaine since the Florence letter.
Crowded Queen's Bench hears trial of Detective Louis Naegel for Grand Trunk depot safe robbery. Evidence hints at Harry Phillips's deeper involvement and a hidden thieves’ trap found in Phillips's house. Prosecutors expect more disclosures and Fahey may testify against Phillips. Trial continues with further sensational details anticipated.
Counsel for Mrs Sarah J Robinson the poisoner said a new trial will be sought claiming the verdict did not reflect the evidence. She is under close surveillance suffering nervous prostration with lung bleeds and would require bodily assistance to attend the sentence hearing early next week.
A May 18 hearing in Fall River addressed the contested will of Joseph Lindsey former president of the Fall River Savings Bank. The estate is valued at about 70000 with 7000 to Lindsey's daughter by Purser Smith of the steamer Pilgrim and the remainder to his son Dr. Lindsey of Boston Highlands. The contestant daughter argues proper estate inventory was not filed. The judge reserved decision.
The New York Supreme Court general term dismissed the Arcade Railway Company demurrer to the city’s injunction request. It held the company failed to file the required bond, delaying proceedings. The court ruled the Metropolitan Rapid Transit has no authority to build an elevated Broadway railway, sending the case to the Court of Appeals. the Third Avenue Railroad cannot replace horses with steam or cable motive power.
A Macon City dispatch reports that the Chicago Burlingon and Quincy railroad will dismiss all engineers who cannot run engines with a pilot after May 20. About 60 percent of engineers will lose their jobs as a result of the policy change.
The House heard two major tariff speeches led by Major McKinley against the Mills bill and Colonel Breckinridge in its advocacy. Attended by Justice Harlan and Governor Curtin, the session drew packed galleries as Randall’s prelude gave a critical start.
