Henry H. Rogers died suddenly in New York at 7:20 this morning from a fatal apoplectic attack. He collapsed after waking ill and died before his physician arrived. The 69 year old financier, long linked with Standard Oil, had been in frail health since a previous stroke. Funeral plans were set for Friday at the Church of the Messiah with burial in Fairhaven Massachusetts. Prominent callers and figures such as Mark Twain and John D Rockefeller expressed condolences as speculation about succession and Rogers’s fortune, estimated between 50 and 75 million dollars, began.
Fowler died at his country home north of the city after a second apoplectic stroke. Dr. Fowler noted the decline since a prior stroke about two years earlier and said the deceased had been seen nearly every day in the last several days.
The death of H. H. Rogers of Fairhaven is expected to result in an inheritance tax payment exceeding $300 000 to the State of Massachusetts.
In Hot Springs Virginia on May 19 John D. Rockefeller learned of H. H. Rogers’ death after finishing an 18th hole. He called the loss personal but said the business world would not be unfavorably affected and recalled urging Rogers to slow down.
A copper industry source tied to the Bigelow interests said Mr Rogers appeared in good health yesterday afternoon in New York before news of his death reached him. The confidant described the event as a great shock, reporting the unexpected passing of the oil king.
Henry H. Rogers senior dies leaving an estimated fortune of 60 million dollars. He had largely withdrawn from active business and held major stakes in Tidewater Railroad and Amalgamated Copper. His son, Henry H. Rogers Jr., aged 80, inherits the immense responsibilities and vast holdings.
The article notes a son prepared to step into his late father’s role and continue the family’s broad business interests. It references further details on page 14 under Other Stories of Mr. Rogers.
