Flames and a gas explosion devastate Fraterville coal mine near Coal Creek Tennessee killing most workers. Rescue efforts reveal a tomb-like underground as bodies rise to the surface and authorities note prior ventilation failures and high fatal risks.
In Cambridge jail the small framed Nipa Danforth, known as the midget murderess of Andrew J. Emery, spent last night after pleading not guilty in South Framingham court. A crowded courtroom and curious onlookers watched as she appeared, pale and doll like in a white figured gown.
The Boston area arrest trial unfolds with Franz Hugo Krebs Jr representing the accused. Ill wife and four children, including Beatrice, watch as the girl pleads not guilty and is remanded to East Cambridge jail without bail. Emery’s funeral follows in Framingham.

Capehart, who claimed to be Steve’s card, fled but was captured nearby. McLaughlin, severely wounded with neck and head cuts, refused ether during surgery yet kept his humor. doctors list him in serious but recoverable condition.
In New York on May 19 Justice James A O Gorman was elected grand sachem of Tammany Hall after a brief, adjourned meeting. He won on the first ballot with eight votes to ex Mayor Robert A Van Wyck s four, then the result was made unanimous. George W Plunkitt became father of the council and Adrian T Kiernan scribe.
Mayor Collins appointments were yesterday confirmed by the Board of Aldermen. William Doogue as superintendent of public grounds was first to be taken up and the vote was 12 to 1. City Treasurer George A. Crocker was the next nomination considered and the vote stood 7 to 6 in favor. Charles Phipps as cemetery trustee the board voted 7 to 6 in favor. Charles Mintz as deputy sealer of weights and measures was confirmed by a vote of 10 to 3. Alderman Kelly defended Councilman Clark's order for an appropriation of 100000 for the East Boston ferries and the order was adopted.
Wellesley College students toured Boston landmarks in rainy weather, inspecting the Paul Revere house now used as a grocery store with upper floors showing curtained windows and men smoking pipes. They also visited Hancock and Eliot schools, the Old North Church, and Copps Hill Burying Ground.
Report from Caluas Goliad via Associated Press says a tornado killed about 90 people and wounded 100, mostly Black residents in the west negro district. Town placed under military rule with 40 doctors tending to the injured and many homes destroyed. Estimated property loss at $100,000 plus extensive country damage.
Divers at Cuttyhunk report the steamer Indian shows a sound bottom with keel undamaged and about 40 new plates needed to restore its condition. The vessel will be towed to Boston for repairs and should depart for home later this week.
George E. Cunningham was awarded 3500 in yesterday’s verdict in Superior Court against the Boston Elevated Railway Company. He had sought 225000 for injuries to himself his horse and his wagon after a collision with a car.
In Galway a county contest turned violent as Lord Morris and Killanin led supporters against Nationalist opponents. The clashes caused a dozen injuries, with some serious, as the May 19 events in Dublin report.

Quebec May 19 news says Judge Lafontaine remanded Gaynor and Greene to Montreal jail. New writs of habeas corpus call sheriff to produce the pair. High Constable Gate and provincial constables depart at 5 PM by special train to Montreal to serve papers and attempt capture.
Judge John Hopkins of the Superior Court died at his Millbury home at 6 oclock tonight from cancer of the intestines following a rapid decline after a March term breakdown. Born March 19 1840 in Gloucester England he was the only English born judge in the state. He studied at Phillips Academy Andover and Dartmouth College class of 1862 and practiced law in Worcester Millbury and Worcester. He served two terms in the State Senate was a Democratic candidate for Congress and was appointed to the bench by Governor Rusell in 1891. He leaves a widow a daughter Mrs Grace Magowan of Savannah Ga and two sons Herbert S and Perman P of Millbury. Funeral arrangements not announced.
London May 20 The Daily Chronicle correspondent reports a thwarted plot against Emperor Francis Joseph on a night Vienna to Budapest train. A bomb placed in the imperial compartment was found during final inspection ten minutes before his arrival. Several railroad employees were dismissed as the case was investigated. The Emperor banned Vienna newspapers from mentioning the affair.
