Fire destroyed James Otis Marshall's planing mill and nearby Johnson's dye house in Lynn after midnight. By 2:30 a.m. the loss was estimated at $100,000 with over 100 workers affected as flames raged through the district. Residents fled their homes and prayers rose for trapped victims.
In Ricamont Virginia on May 19 the Democratic State convention settled a split over Chicago delegates. Twenty four delegates will cast thirteen for Cleveland and eleven anti Cleveland. North Carolina also supports Cleveland. Raeien North Carolina May 19 the state platform omits the presidential question. Elected eighteen district delegates mostly favor Cleveland. Elias Carret Edgecomb nominated for governor on sixth ballot.
William J. Pendergast, 17, the sole breadwinner for an aged grandmother and a young sister, was struck by an outbound East Boston electric on Tremont Street Roxbury near Prentiss Street. He survived initial impact but suffers internal injuries and remains at City Hospital in critical condition. Motorman Whitley shut down the brake promptly but the car guard dragged the youth before he could escape. The accident underscores dangerous grade crossings and calls for safety improvements.

Special Justice Howard of the West Roxbury Municipal Court reviewed the inquest into George Kuntz death on May 3. Oliver Curtis Perry pleaded guilty to four indictments in Lyons court and was sentenced to forty nine and a quarter years hard labor in Auburn Prison.
