Stephen Dudley Field, called the father of the trolley car, died at his home at age 68. The Stockbridge inventor held more than 200 patents including the quadruplex telegraph, electric elevator, speed amplifier for ocean cables, stock ticker, hotel annunciator, and police patrol telegraph.
Biography notes Stephen Field as inventor of the stock ticker the Field quadruplex and many electrical devices. He built trolley cars at Stockbridge, served as chief engineer for London capitalists, and created the police patrol telegraph fire signal selective signal messenger call and electric elevator. He equipped the first long distance telephony line San Francisco to the Sierra and earned recognition among major electrical societies.
Police and Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals swept down on a cock fight in Hudson with two automobile loads of officers taking names of about twenty five participants. The raid left many fugitive into the woods and seized the entire outfit.
May 18 in North Easton, two Ames Shovel Works employees, Au gust Johnson and Peter Cordensky, drowned when their leaky boat overturned while bailing in Long Pond. The five others in the party could not swim and watched helplessly as they sank within 10 feet of shore at about 5:30 this morning.
Thirty four live birds seven dead and three injured were captured with ten teams two automobiles coats hats sweaters scales and all the gear of a first class main. John Degg attempted to rescue Cordensky after retrieving Johnson from the icy pond. Chief Richard Branston and Officer Thomas Downey recovered Johnson’s body while Cordensky sank. Degg survived with medical care after cramps. Others watched from shore as the two men disappeared beneath the water.
B Sanders Walker a prominent banker and real estate agent in Macon Georgia remains unconscious and believed dying after taking poison by mistake last Wednesday night. Doctors warned he could not live more than a few hours and he resigned himself to his fate.
Mrs Walker collapsed then held a gravely poised reception before her husband drew up a will. He ingested bichloride of mercury mistaken for aspirin after a 3 am headache. Physicians say uremic poisoning paralyzed his kidneys while a nationwide medical consultation sought to save him.
In London on May 18 suffragette speakers faced noisy crowd interruptions at Hyde Park and failed to address audiences. Police escorted them from the park while meetings continued in Hampstead and other suburbs with similar disruption.
The Rev Dr Walter Calley of Jamaica Plain Baptist Church resigns citing Governor Foss and family membership as part of the church. He says the withdrawal from a signed pledge to fund half the parish house blocks further progress and that another minister could better carry on church work.
Dr Calley recounts how Governor Foss agreed to pay half the parish house cost up to 4000 dollars and signed an agreement. The church raised 4300 dollars but Foss withdrew the offer due to maintenance costs, prompting the pastor to resign to allow new leadership. Congregation members wept as he spoke.
At 1 Wa verly Place Chelsea a wedding guest John Marchkeski 30 of South Boston fell over the stair railing from the top floor to the first. He was found unconscious picked up and taken to Frost Hospital with a broken arm and a head cut.
Mary O Neill age 8 and Alice Brennan age 4 were found near death from suffocation after being imprisoned in a closet for about 30 hours. Police and rescuers removed them from the cramped space where they had endured extreme confinement. Medical teams rushed the youngsters to a hospital seeking to stabilize them during emergency treatment.
Michael Brennan rescued Mary O Neil eight and Alice Brennan four hundred twelve from a closet at his Jamaica Plain home on Chestnut street after they were locked inside for thirty hours and nearly suffocated. The father, upon hearing of the disappearances, discovered their plight and freed them.
Arthur T. D. Jull spoke at the Boston Central Labor Union educational hour. About 500 delegates approved a rising vote of thanks. Delegates from Stationary Engineers Union No. 18 reported a factory grievance at a famous cigar company and agreed to take definite action at the next C L U meeting.
Police investigate who locked the shed door after the body of George F. Corliss, a Baker's Basin shipbuilder, was found outside. Autopsy shows likely skull fracture from a fall at work Saturday. initial murder suspicion faded.
Corliss, 43, vanished after leaving the yards Saturday and was found dead in a rear shed on Commercial Street. His wife notified police. Medical Examiner Staser and doctors Cook and Bullock performed an autopsy as investigators seek how he entered and why the shed door locked from the outside.
Gloucester May 18 Sunday blue laws go into effect with work stopped at fish wharves and other sites where Sunday labor had been ongoing.
Saturday afternoon two youngsters disappeared after exploring a dark third floor closet in the Brennan home. A district-wide search by family, neighbors, and police failed to locate them by Sunday morning. The locked closet door clicked shut and the children cried aloud before succumbing to exhaustion as authorities continued the probe.
