A powerful blast erupts inside a large building sending flames through clothing and traps a group inside. Men race to the top seeking a ladder, but its absence forces a dangerous scramble. School children frantically attempt rescue as fire crews work to free those trapped.
Three men including a Boston engineer die in a fire and explosion while imprisoned in a 60 foot high steel water tank at Peak's Island Maine where repairs were underway. Victims named Max Carstensen construction engineer and two others.
Mrs. Eaton feared her husband might poison her and noted his opiate use during testimony at the reopened inquest into Rear Admiral Joseph G. Eaton's death. Neighbors and seven witnesses were called to the Abington courthouse as the case continued.
New York May 16 Harper & Bros. announced the sale of Harper's Weekly to Norman Hapgood and associates with delivery set for June 1. Colonel George Harvey president of Harper & Bros. will transfer his editorial duties from Harper's Weekly to the North American Review.

Bishop William Croswell Doane, head of the Albany diocese, died at the Hotel Manhattan in New York City shortly before 1 am. He was 81 years old.
Bishop Doane born in Boston on March 2, 1832. His father George Washington Doane served as the second bishop of New Jersey. He was consecrated Bishop of Albany on February 2, 1869.

Arlington High School students were warned by Principal Fred C. Mitchell that turkey trots and other modern dances would not be allowed during a evening dance by the musical clubs. Superintendent John Scully stepped in mid party to threaten removal for further violations on the floor.
The Arlington High dance scene drew about 400 students as the turkey trot and other dances ran for spring social hour. Principal Mitchell ordered a halt to the trot while Superintendent Scully warned dancers to stop. many parents applauded as he pledged action against future offenders.
