Somerville Holds Dual Flag Raising Amid Large Turnout
Immense crowds attended two flag raisings in Somerville last night. At 7 pm the Somerville post office emporium led by EB Cam bridge and the Letter Carriers Band carried torches through streets to the post office with guests including Postmaster Thomas Alderman James F Davlin Hon Z Bowman and Rev A E Winship. A fireworks display and cheers marked the moment as the flag rose. Postmaster Thomas received a reception at the Central Club on High stand avenue. City Hall hosted a second banner raising with the Board of Aldermen and Common Council present along with department staff and a patriotic band. The flag was hoisted by Fuller of the public buildings department and many smaller flags fell to the ground. Aldermen Davlin Kilmer and S Z Bowman spoke while Mayor Perry was unable to attend. A pocketbook containing 50 to 60 dollars was reported stolen from John B Blake while he stood among the crowd at the post office event.
