Aboard the auxiliary cruiser St Paul a fierce blaze in the coal bunkers burned for half a day. 1300 tons of ammunition were on board as 200 men fought the fire, cooling walls with water while ventilators had been removed. Thirteen sailors were overcome by heat and carried to safety.
The cruiser Columbia weighed anchor at 3 22 PM after being anchored at the Delaware Breakwater at noon today. Its destination is unknown as it set to sea from Philadelphia on May 18.
Rumor circulates that a Spanish squadron may anchor at the port of Colon in Colombia on May 18, signaling potential naval activity in the region.

He was unconscious most of the last day and showed no pain, with doctors predicting his death any hour while relatives and close friends kept vigil and Hawarden tenants gathered at castle gates. The family plans a national funeral though a Hawarden graveyard burial is likely, while Hawarden village buzzes with reporters and photographers.
The nation and foreign observers mourn the passing of Mr. Gladstone. Tributes flow from Hawarden to Westminster with calls for a royal funeral at public expense and Westminster Abbey monument. Leaders, dignitaries, and press unify in reverent tribute.
