New York May is John Roach's despatch built for the government on its third trial trip left the city this morning. Off Whitestone full steam to quicken performance but a heated journal caused a stoppage and the vessel failed to meet the contract speed. After a five hour outing the Dolphin returned and anchored off West Thirty fourth street at about 6 o'clock P.M.
Outrawa Ontario May 18 The government has not yet acted on the case of Rie It is expected he will be tried for treason felony under the 1869 act Either by a general court martial or by a civil tribunal If by the former the governor general will appoint the court and confirm the sentence If by the latter a stipendiary magistrate or justice of the peace with a six person jury will try him and report evidence to the governor general via the lieutenant governor The trial likely will occur in the northwest probably Regina
Wilkes Barre May 18 Coroner O Malley probes a railroad wreck on the Philadelphia and Reading line. The disaster is attributed to the gross carelessness of Jacob Hoover the trains despatcher who granted right of way to two engines on a single track in opposite directions. Hoover fled Ashby after learning Engineer Street and Fireman Shank were killed and was last seen aboard a Pennsylvania train toward Sunbury or Harrisburg. efforts are being made to capture Hoover.
A bloody fight at Hickory Grove church nine miles from Jacksonville between the West and Langford brothers over personal letters from the last campaign. William Langford was killed. George Langford and Taft Langford were severely wounded. Eugenee West shot. Abe and Johnson West injured lightly.
Early today at Bibb Manufacturing Company in Macon Georgia a boiler exploded killing engineer Frank Gibson fracturing Wesley Johnsons skull who is expected to die and injuring three others. The brick engine house was wrecked though the main building was unharmed. Machinery and engine house damage is about 10000. The boiler had been recently inspected and deemed sound but was said to be defective. About 150 workers lost their jobs.
Michael Mulaney, an inmate at the Westmoreland County alms house, confessed to killing James Tearney in a Pittsburg saloon brawl in January 1871. He had long brooded about the crime and fled after the murder to avoid arrest, later returning and being admitted to the almshouse, his fear of police leading to the confession.
Dover New Hampshire May 18 Police report a bare knuckle fight on the outskirts of the city between Harry Glidden and Michael Broadbent both shoe factory workers over a young woman. Witnesses say the mill continued after the clash and the city marshal investigates for possible prosecution.
A regular mail train descending toward Yave BC went through a 60 foot high trestle this morning at 4 o clock. All cars except the passenger coaches fell into the gully wrecking them. Fireman Stanton and Brake man Veoleiitanniy were killed. Express Agent Cosmenton and Mail Clerk Armstrong were slightly injured. The crash is blamed on swollen river from recent rains washing away two trestle bents.

A mob of near 1000 pursued the suspected killers and a round up of tramps occurred near Sioux City. Eleven captured amid gunfire. one tramp reportedly fell after police fire. authorities believe Williams murderer may be among those rounded up.
Indian police and a citizen posse battled a large gang on Choctaw Nation lands in Indian Territory. Desperado killed, two captured, remaining fugitives escaped after driving off several hundred cattle. Public dispatch from St. Louis dated May 18 reports the clash.
A Bridgeport dispatch reports 17 year locusts first appearing near the surface in Chicago. Densities indicate a large swarm is imminent and could devastate extensive apple orchards planted this spring by capitalists.
Kingston Massachusetts closes all schools today as diphtheria spreads among pupils. Four deaths reported yesterday with more expected today. About 90 people afflicted, disease chiefly affecting children ages two to six. Funerals private, authorities intensify efforts to halt spread.
In Framingham, a special town meeting rejected a $10,000 appropriation for two steam fire engines after debate. J. J. Boynton was elected member of the board of health. A $100 gift to Edgell library fund trustee and a purchase of a horse roller were also approved.

They also inspected fire stations to view the police patrol system before departing for Boston.
In a Long Island City tenement house Frederick Cooley, John Woods, and their wives fought with carving knives, pokers, and shovels. All were injured. Mrs Woods was seriously hurt. Woods, Cooley, and Mrs Cooley were jailed awaiting word on Mrs Woods injuries.
Rutland Vermont May 18 state cases against John B Page for embezzling Rutland railroad funds have been notice pressed by the state's attorney due to civil case results favoring Page. The four Haven embezzlement cases have been continued to the next county court term.
In Troy New York on May 18 the circuit court held Bridgeman’s bond invalid under statute in the case Bridgeman versus Hall to test title to the office of chamberlain. Judge Peckham ruled Bridgeman never legally qualified as Chamberlain since the bond failed.

Angelina Jarvis a colored woman died suddenly this morning at the Neck on Long Island. She was 110 years old and formerly a slave.
Montreal May 18 reports the final gap in the Canadian Pacific railroad has been closed and the line now runs continuously to the Columbia River.

Natick Mass May 18 Rev John J Cullen of South Framingham led a high mass over the remains of Rev Michael Walsh brother of Rev John Walsh of Natick. About 30 priests from across the state attended and 69 parishioners from North Brookfield escorted the body to burial. Also noted were the first anniversary observance of Company G first regiment M V M at their armory and a county commissioners meeting in Natick discussing a street relaying plan to Sherborn adjourned to June 6 at Cambridge.
Halifax report notes the sentry on H. M. S. Garnet was sentenced to 42 days confinement after Paul Boyton attached a dummy torpedo to the vessel in New York harbor. A report on the lieutenant on duty at that time will be forwarded to England.
Augusta Maine May 18 Mrs Mary Bailey of West Gardiner committed suicide Sunday morning by drowning in a pond near her home. She was demented on the subject of religion.
Mrs Mary A Livermore spoke to a Tremont audience on Wendell Phillips and His Times outlining slavery history from its start to the abolition movement. She highlighted Garrison, the Boston abolition row, Phillips debut at Faneuil Hall, Lovejoy’s murder, and Phillips powerful anti slavery speeches.
Peter O'Brien of No. 79 Tremont street Charlestown committed death by his own action Monday mor al by hanging. Deceased leaves a wife and five children. Officers of the fourth police visited the Sy aing saloons No. 5949 Essex street and No 531 Washington street abouts P. M., Monday, but found nothing at either place. The grocery store of Hugh Giblin, corner of Sixth and C streets, Southau, was entered some time Sunday morning, and about $27 in cash was stolen.

Also in court sentencing for a separate assault case Maggie Morris etal and a verdict in favor of Abbey and Gilmore over rent for the Cosmopolitan theatre. The Fifth Avenue theatre opened Fra Diavolo with Alfa Noman making a hit as Zerlina. R Morse ex bookkeeper National Suspender arraigned for forgery 7000 held 20000 bail. Muldoon and Abs Greco Roman wrestling at Irving Hall ends in a draw for 590 and world championship.
