The Post reports a gray spot on Baby Hippo's pink left hoof drew charity from three young contributors. Joseph and Thomas Connors of 534 East Third Street sent in their donation after reading about the hippo yesterday.
William W. Ormsbee publicly displayed his chest to prove paternity of seven year old Dorothy Ormsbee using the undulated breast bone as evidence against Emily P. Towner who claims to be the mother. The cleft forms a socket large enough for a fist and astonished onlookers.
Fragmentary OCR describes a mark identical to Dorothy's Natibe suggesting motherhood of a child or a related identity. The readable text hints at a larger context but lacks complete details, leaving the core connection between the mark and Dorothy unclear.
John Hays Hammond Jr. of Gloucester demonstrates a private radio system developed at the Hammond Radio Research Laboratories. The method creates a protected communication zone so other stations not equipped cannot decipher messages, and it remains operable under atmospheric conditions that defeat standard radios.
Neil Carlin aged 102 of Portland died today. Born in Ireland he came to Portland 83 years ago and worked for a public service corporation until retirement at age 82 twenty years ago.
Babe Ruth, homer king of the New York Americans, will not automatically be reinstated when his suspension ends May 20. He may apply for reinstatement to baseball commissioner K M Landis at that time, secretary Leslie O'Connor said.
Ruth along with Bob Meusel and Bill Piercy were suspended until May 2 after barnstorming post season. The order barred league games until May 20 when rein statement could be requested. O’Connor said a request can be made by letter telegraph telephone or in person and will be considered by Commissioner Landis.
Postmaster General Work announced formal approval of a two division plan for the Boston office. The plan creates two assistant postmasters in charge of finances and of mails, after discussions with Postmaster Baker and Superintendent Hammond. A number of minor reorganizations follow, including 72 clerk appointments.
Attorney General J Weston Allen plans a Republican bid for governor against Governor Cox likely within weeks. Lieutenant Governor Alvan T Fuller is expected to announce a run if Allen enters the race, with Fuller friends saying he would run after completing his second term.
Albert Thibault a 13 year old from Fall River walked into Providence police headquarters on May 17 to surrender. He said he had run away from Walpole Training School for the 18th time in three years. Police searched Pawtucket for four other runaways and learned from his breakfast tale that he was cold and hungry.
Josephat Hebert will remain West Warwick police chief until next November despite a town meeting resolution criticizing him for not enforcing the prohibition law. Voters voted the police appropriation and told the treasurer not to pay the chief from any funds. Hebert said removal would take more than a salary dispute, noting his contract runs to November. The job pays 1200 dollars a year plus fees.
American League games saw Boston edge St Louis 4 3 and Philadelphia defeat Chicago 3 1 in 13 innings. New York crushed Cleveland 66 4. National League highlights include Chicago 6 over Cincinnati 1 and St Louis 11 to Brooklyn 0. Eastern League scores feature Fitchburg 9 0 Springfield 8 10 innings. New Haven 9 over qentesvurr 2 and Albany 6 Brit 4 with Hartford 5 Pitiaheld 2.
Washington May 17 Ordinary Government expenditures for the first 10 months of the current fiscal year dropped by about 1.5 billion dollars from a year earlier while public debt disbursements fell by over 1 billion dollars according to a Treasury outlay statement covering July 1, 1921 to April 30, 1922.
Danielson Connecticut May 17 John B Bessett proposes a mass motorists strike to force lower gasoline prices by leaving cars in garages for 30 to 90 days. He estimates 9 million owners could impact demand and reduce the record gasoline reserves of 854 million gallons.
In Winsted Connecticut on May 17 Mrs Flora Louise Benedict 81 widow of German Benedict owner of a large Geer Mountain farm was shot by Sidney Ward 52 a farmhand who then shot her daughter Mrs Cora Page 42 widow of Merritt Page and fled into woods where he was captured hours later.
Ward, discharged two years earlier by Mrs. Benedict for intemperate habits, returned to the Benedict home and fired on Mrs. Benedict as she fled to the cellar. He then shot at Mrs. Page, forced her into a hallway, and menaced others including Mrs. Carrie Morgan and farmhand William Farrell. After the double shooting, Ward boasted to Howland that he had “the old mouser” and would not be caught.
Dudley Street police under Sergeant Dickinson raided a fourth floor warehouse at 21652 Washington Street and found a 250 gallon still in operation with 4 gallons of liquor and 2 gallons of mash. George Bronson 25 of 165 West Newton Street was arrested on prohibition violation and unlawful sale charges.
In Ashland New Hampshire on May 17 George Ellis fired at his wife and mother in law then aimed his rifle at his heart and killed himself. He had earlier wounded Mrs Edward Ramsdell and fired at Kenneth Ramsdell who escaped. Ellis leaves a widow and four children.
Philadelphia May 17 Pinchot former State Forester widened his margin over Attorney General George E Alter in the Republican nomination fight. With 619 districts left from 7934 Pinchot led by 4765 votes on unofficial returns. Pinchot 483774 488539 so far.
Hundreds of gallons of a highly explosive liquid were discovered in a two story wooden building at 64 New Heath Street. Police and fire officials ordered Trank Santisi, his wife and four children to spend the night away from home while investigators analyze the substance.

About 400 Winchester School pupils will boycott today as they march through the town’s principal streets to the superintendent’s office. They protest the removal of the principal and demand an explanation from the school committee.
Governor Cox signed a bill to align state liquor law enforcement with the Volstead Act. Justices of inferior courts objected to requiring them to hear evidence for warrants. clerks currently issue warrants in some cases. The governor said the provision is necessary to protect all parties under the new enforcement law.
Forecasters expect showers in Boston and vicinity Thursday and Friday with little temperature change. Fresh to strong east and southeast winds stretch from Sandy Hook to Hatteras, bringing rain, thick weather, and overcast showers especially north of Sandy Hook.
Unsettled conditions with a chance of showers through today and tonight. Temperature readings show mild variation, with readings near the low to mid 50s in the morning and upper 50s to around 60 later in the day.
