Americans Expected to Help Halt Major German Offensive Aimed at Channel Ports by Bolstering British Front in Ypres Sector. Sinn Fein leaders reportedly detained as part of wartime security measures amid tensions in Ireland and Western Front operations.
The arrival of the fifth American contingent strengthens British lines in Flanders as US troops depart from a U S cantonment and Pershing's forces remain intact. The move is hailed as a major shift in United States military policy and a key development since entering the war.

London officials confirm a German plot in Ireland with a lord lieutenant proclamation by Viscount French and reports of numerous arrests. Earlier hints linked Sinn Fein agents to German actors and a man landing from a German submarine is cited as supporting evidence.
Washington May 17. The total of the third Liberty Loan reaches 4 170 019 650 dollars, an oversubscription of 39 percent above the three billion minimum sought.
In Picardy, Lt James Pellache of Harvard and Lt Stephen FitzGerald of Boston are reported killed in action. Pellache led a working party under attack and was mortally wounded after heroically straining to aid teammates. FitzGerald, shot through the head, continued leading his men until death, while a Boston corporal defended a fallen comrade and a German foe single handedly.
In the American League Boston beat Detroit and Washington 11 to 1. Cleveland routed Philadelphia 65 to 4. New York defeated St. Louis 7 to 4. Chicago 0. In the National League Boston triumphed 8 to 1 over St. Louis and Chicago lost 2 to 5 to Philadelphia. Cincinnati edged New York 5 to 1. Brooklyn won 7 to 4 against Pittsburgh.
President Wilson arrived in New York to review the Red Cross parade tomorrow and to open with an address the Red Cross drive for a $100,000,000 war fund. He was met by Colonel and Mrs. Edward M. House at their home. Continued on Page 4-Second Col.
The forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for Saturday fair and Sunday unsettled with occasional local showers, cooler temperatures and moderate southerly winds. In Washington on May 17 the New England forecast predicts fair Saturday with Sunday partly cloudy and likely showers, cooler except along the Maine coast.
The second Red Cross fund drive for 100 million dollars to aid Europe and domestic relief will launch in Boston today with 15 000 to 20 000 participants marching under the Red Cross symbol of mercy through the city streets.
