Flood conditions in southwestern Maine with 5.6 inches rainfall in 23 hours flood Lewiston and Saco isolating areas. Rowboats move passengers in Yarmouth while eight acres of business district flood. Portland reports rails disrupted and roads washed away many thousands in damage.
Eight acres in Yarmouth’s business district were submerged as floodwaters rose and passengers on the electric line from Ants City to Brunswick were ferried by rowboats. The public library and Morrison family home were isolated by the rising waters.
Edna Cunniff an 18 year old of 65 High Street Waltham has been missing since Saturday noon. Her parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Cunniff suspect a Malden woman who is about ten years older and married but not living with her husband. Both women were employed at the Waltham watch factory.
The Bow Street court ended three days of preliminary treason hearings for Sir Roger Casement and Daniel Bailey. Both prisoners stood in the dock as the magistrate offered to hear any statement, warning it would be recorded and could be used as evidence.
The magistrate asks Roger Casement and his co-defendant Bailey for remarks. Both reply nothing as they are committed to trial and escorted from the dock in a brief adjournment note continuing on page four.
Paris May 17 The Franco American Flying Corps crews led a daytime raid over German lines with Lt William K Thaw and Corporal Victor Chapman among the fliers. Despite heavy shelling Thaw's plane returned damaged but intact, while Chapman and McConnell faced near misses at 12 000 feet. Cowdin Rockwell Prince Hall and others participated as more flotillas are planned from 40 volunteers. Cowdin was cited for bravery with the military medal after downing a German aircraft in Verdun.
Washington May 11 An elev enth hour scheme of the Republican old guard to head off the nomination of either Associate Justice Hughes or Colonel Roosevelt was disclosed. With a growing belief Hughes will be the Chicago convention nominee next month they aim to force balloting on the first day to prevent sentiment crystallizing for Hughes or a stampede to Roosevelt due to delay.
The captain and crew of the lumber schooner Lucia Porter were rescued by life-savers from the Nahant Coast Guard Station after the ship grounded on King's Beach in Swampscott. The vessel is breaking up on the beach as breakers crash over the decks and cargo is carried away.
The Porter and cargo of 1 548 000 laths. The ship’s mascot a large Maltese cat named Pansy is believed lost after two rescue attempts. Lifesavers pulled the cat from the ship both times, but it returned, and Captain Frank A. Gove halted further efforts after a near-swash with a cutter.
The State Senate moved the station bill to engrossment for a new Boylston street station at Arlington street in the subway. The measure does not compel construction or include the original penalty, leaving the decision optional with the I road.
Raynham May 17 Gustave A Pearson arrested on a warrant charging him with the murder of Mrs Anna Pearson in Needham. He had worked for her as a farm hand and disappeared after her death until state police traced him to a local farm job.
Two Mexicans were wounded and captured by U S troops under Major George T Langhorne in a clash south of El Pino. No American casualties were reported. The report was sent to General Funston from Los Alamos, 45 miles south of the border.
A buyer seeks a reasonably sized farm about fifteen miles from Boston on a good road. Requirements include an eight or ten room house, a chauffeur’s house, and garage space for two or three cars. Preference mentioned for Dedham. Address C. K. T. Boston Post.
The Batavier V, a 1500 ton Dutch steamer en route from London to Rotterdam, was blown up in the North Sea. One American passenger, Luigi Mancini of New Mexico, was lost. two Americans were saved and three crew members perished. The sinking is thought to be caused by a mine, not a torpedo. U.S. Consul reports findings support a mine. Survivors recount the explosion and sinking while at sea.
The Rev. Charles Chase Wilson testifies in U S District Court that he was swayed by feminine influence and liberal views on dancing and drinking. He explains he did not deny love in letters to Laura Louise Johnson because she sought a declaration and potentially an engagement to marry.
He testified that her letters were his first hint she loved him and believed he loved her. He said he did not understand her phrases about wonderful hours and sacred blissful moments. Continued on Page 9 Second Col.
A German torpedo boat was sunk by a German mine off Falstebo Sweden. All but one of the crew were saved according to Berlingske Tidende's Malmo correspondent.
An earthquake rattled a vast central Italian area from Aquila through Abruzzi to Perugia and Pesaro, with shocks repeated many times overnight and into today. The tremors also affected Forli Fer rara and included the republic of San Marino, causing widespread alarm.
News from Pesaro notes some houses damaged with no known casualties so far. The tremors are linked to the ongoing seismic movement that peaked in the January 1915 Avezzano earthquake, with thousands killed near Aquila. Shocks in the region have persisted, with an estimated 0 events recorded, mostly too slight for the unaided eye.
Dublin May 17 It was learned that Premier Asquith plans a modified home rule after a Dublin visit but Ulster rejects it. The plan would apply to southern and western counties for now hoping Ulsterites accept a Dublin parliament eventually.
Premier Asquith, urged by allies and cautious of Sinn Fein unrest, weighs a new Irish governance plan. Sir Edward Carson and Ulster leaders resist direct home rule, while Mr Asquith seeks wider opinions and aims to devise a cabinet proposal. He plans to visit Cork next to gather input.
