Market Strength Paired with London Apathy on May 17
Strong trading in New York and Boston lifted stocks without London, as grangers and industrials led gains amid mixed optimism on China Japan tensions. Copper shares rebounded in London influenced by spot and futures advances, while rumors and broker notes pointed to further rises in Chicago Burlington and Quincy and select copper issues.

Norwegians Honor May 17 on Union Wharf With Flags and Liberty
The crew of the Norwegian vessel Ophir at Union wharf celebrated May 17 with flags bunting and signal letters. Norwegian sailors shared a day of liberty as a remembrance of Norway breaking from Denmark. Captains Sears and Norwood reported timely towings of vessels from Baltimore and Havana with coal sugar and other cargoes amid normal Havana news. The port saw swift operations as towboats Honeybrook and others set records in moving between Portland and this port. Advices listed wreck of Lixxie W.
