Fire Lost Terror At Dudley School Basement Blaze Alarm

A fire in the Dudley School basement sent smoke through halls as 700 students evacuated in three minutes. Fire alarms were rung, engines and ladder companies responded, but the blaze remained contained to a waste paper box thought sparked by rats. No damage reported.

NEWBURYPORT May 16 The Superior Court adjourned to Salem Monday. John Dunn of Lawrence is sentenced to three years in State prison for robbery. Rachel Smith of Lawrence gets nine months in the House of Correction for adultery. George W Woodwell Jr faces 150 dollars for illegal sale of liquor. Jury returns guilty of simple assault and not guilty of manslaughter in John Wilton case from North Andover.

Jones & Laughlin raises wages at American Iron Works

Pittsburg May 16 Jones and Laughlin the operator of the American Iron Works has voluntarily increased the wages of all skilled workers by 10 percent. About 4000 men took part in the increase.

President Cleveland Faces Twin and Quadruplet Letters

Washington May 16 The President's private secretary says he wants no interviews and will ignore the flood of letters claiming babies named for the Cleveland family. He notes forty two such letters today and debunks the $500 gift tale as causing false claims of quadruplets. The secretaries say only one confirmed quadruplet case exists, with the father choosing three names from the President's family and seeking a fourth for the girls.

Appointment of a trustee for Hale estate at Salem hearing

In Haverhill on May 16 a Salem Probate Court hearing addressed the trust for Colonel E. J. M. Hale’s estate valued above 3 million dollars. Originally three trustees fell to two after Mrs. E. J. Hale’s death. requests surfaced for Arthur D. Veasey of Haverhill and Lucy and Mabel Howe of Cambridge to back Frank L. Washburn of Lowell, with Walter Hale opposing. Judge Harmon appointed Frank Washburn as trustee.
