May 16 New Haven Conn. Temp. Chairman John A. Tibbitts led a packed session praising James G Blaine Chauncey M Depew and others while urging tariff reform and warning against Democratic free trade. Delegates elected to Chicago and a platform backed veterans Civil Service reform and anti free trade while denouncing the Democratic postal and fisheries policies. Maine Prohibition names Volney B Cushing Neal Dow and Hannah Bailey as delegates and electors with a prohibition platform calling for national ban on liquor and tariff revision by a commission.
Norfork Va May 16 Chairman Barbour called the Democratic State convention to order in the Academy of Music today. The house was filled with a large representative delegation for Virginia. W W Berry of Nelson county was made temporary chairman and addressed the convention.
Dayton May 16 The Democratic State convention met and named temporary chairman S F Hunt who praised President Cleveland. Candidates were acclaimed for secretary of state Boston G Young Holmes county judge Lyman R Critchfield Pike county board James Emmett. The platform endorses Cleveland and renomination, backs Mills tariff, supports actual settlers on lands, pensions for soldiers sailors, tax cuts to reduce surplus, sympathy for Ireland, curbs on corporate power and repeal of duties on trust industries.
Nashville May 16 The Democratic convention renominated Governor Robert L Taylor on the fortieth ballot after a bitter session. He urged unity to win a large majority and settle Tennessee as a Democratic state. Opposition within the party remained strong with about 300 delegates abstaining on the final ballot.
At the Sppauia Missouri state convention the Republican platform denounces ballot box frauds in the South, backs tariff revision for protection of American industry and labor, condemns Cleveland’s policies and the Mills tariff, opposes free wool lead zinc and iron, seeks disabled soldiers relief as service compensation, condemns pension vetoes, and pledges strong support for the national Republican nominees. Nominations are FE. E. Kimball for Governor, George H. Wallace for Lieutenant Governor, F. W. Mott for Secretary of State, and A. B. (illegible) for Treasurer.

George Benson, the Patti ticket swindler whose habeas corpus petition was denied by the U S Supreme Court, killed himself at Ludlow Street Jail by leaping from the second tier to the floor below at 6 30 p m. He died at 10 15 p m after sustaining fatal injuries.
