Washington May 15 Colonel Robert G Ingersoll and Congressman Payson of Illinois urged Judge Gresham as the Republican nominee for president at Chicago next month. Ingersoll praised his independence intelligence and integrity and said a Gresham presidency would unite the party. Payson reported strong Western backing especially in Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa Michigan Kansas and Illinois with 44 Illinois delegates pledged and Blaine sentiment fading.

London May 15 The House of Commons debated a grant of 850000 pounds for Australian colonial defence with a 12 year loan at 3 percent, plus 2600000 consols for port and coaling station works. Proposals include Malta Gibraltar stations, heavy and navy guns, improved barracks, a new repeating infantry rifle, and inquiry into recent gun orders.
