Momentous retreat decision at Le Cateau 1914
British forces faced a strategic choice at Le Cateau as they weighed standing against a larger German advance or resuming retreat at daybreak on the 26th. The plan favored a move toward St. Quentin and Noyon with reserves ready to counter any shift, while resting behind a river barrier if needed. The Fourth Guards brigade, aided by Landrecies defense, inflicted heavy German losses, and Brigadier-General Scott Kerr praised the courage of Francis Grenfell and the Ninth Lancers. The article notes Cambrai still under French control and outlines subsequent retreat operations toward the Oise with cavalry delaying the pursuit.
