C-5 Ready for Atlantic Crossing After Newfoundland Trip

After a grand voyage to St John’s Newfoundland the C-5 prepared to begin its transatlantic crossing. A violent wind finally loosened moorings and the British liner radioed details of a safety plan. The ship’s crew had intended to deploy anti-aircraft guns to counter aerial threats in the water war scenario.

Flier Hodgdon Flies Boston to Atlantic City

Melvin W. Hodgdon, former U S Army aviator, competed for the Boston Globe prize by flying from Boston to Atlantic City in a little over five hours. He stopped 1 hour 16 minutes at Mineola Field Long Island. He flew a Whittemore Hamm biplane built in Boston, leaving Saugus at 9 45 pm and landing at Atlantic City aviation field at 8 pm.

Nancy No. 4 Forced Back By Heavy Seas At Trepassey

Trepassey Newfoundland May 15 The navy transatlantic NC 4 planes failed to depart for the Azores as high seas prevented take off. Nancy No 4 landed in Trepassey Harbor while sister planes taxied four miles through treacherous narrows then halted due to gale swept waves.

Dirigible C-5 Escapes Moorings Off St Johns New Fouled by Gale

The US navy dirigible C-5 broke from her moorings in a gale at St Johns Newfoundland and drifted at sea for hours before rescue attempts by the destroyer Edwards and salvage plans. A British steamship radioed the blimp’s position, while pursuit continued and a transatlantic flight plan faced a setback.

Transatlantic Flight Prepares From Harbor to Open Bay

For nearly two hours the NC-1 and NC-3 moved from the inner harbor toward the open bay escorted by motor launches. Farewells had been said as the epochal flight neared. They battled a blustery westerly gale while the pilots kept throttles wide and steered around rocks. An hour more passed forging through the narrows as zigzagging launches aided the crossing. Washington May 15 all rules and regulations governing the production manufacture distribution or transportation of oil in its forms including gasolene and of natural gas were removed today by an order of Fuel Administrator Garfield.

Governor General Harrison Weds Miss Wrentmore in Chicago

In Chicago on May 15, Governor Francis Burton Harrison aged 44 and Elizabeth Wrentmore aged 18 were married at the Blackstone Hotel after overcoming divorce filings a diphtheria quarantine and intervening objections from college authorities and city health officials. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. Johnston Myers.
