A capacity New York audience fills Carnegie Hall for a memorial meeting honoring 15 Irishmen executed for their role in the Irish uprising. Spectators occupy every seat, stand in aisles, and crowd the gallery as chants and tribute echo through the evening.
A crowd of hundreds to thousands gathered outside a 57th Street hall seeking entry as police denied admission for lack of space. Rain fell while many remained to honor fallen patriots who gave their lives for Ireland.
A woman was rescued and four people driven to the street when a fire on the second floor of 98 Arnold Street in Quincy broke out after midnight. Samuel Kesterbaum awakened by smoke carried his wife outside after returning from the front stairs. He then escaped with her through the back way as dense smoke forced a retreat.
Nancy May 14. President Poincare answered Germany’s peace reply to the American note. He said France does not want Germany to tender peace but wants its adversary to ask for peace. He then stated clearly the only peace acceptable to France.
President Poincare spoke at Molitor garrison before Lorraine refugees. He urged that France will not concede to German terms, seek a peace with guarantees, and insisted Allies must prevail until enemies acknowledge vanquishment. He said refugees are many across France and await deliverance with confidence.
The Stenographers, Bookkeepers, Accountants and Office Employees Union of Boston launches a campaign for a $10 weekly minimum wage and a moral clean up in offices. Members vow to end kissing of stenographers, swearing by employers, and distasteful practices as part of a broader effort to raise working conditions in Greater Boston.
New England interest grows for a boys military camp at Fort Terry Plum Island New York running July 6 to August 10. A regional committee will raise funds to cover attendance for deserving boys unable to pay the 32 50 fee. The 2500 student program follows Plattsburg style training with leaders named from Boston and Middlesex schools.
Hosea Ballou signer of the warrant leads a petition with George Bartlett and Oscar Marden asking for a treasurer or collector and one standing committee member. They seek approval to let proprietors inspect books without a court order and to hire a hall in Boston for Sunday services this year. The Second Universalist Church on Columbus avenue and Clarendon street burned two years ago and worship continues at Harvard Congregational Church.
Walter H. Phillips once known as Maiden Man is seen out rowing with a 5-year-old boy when a small craft capsizes on Montpelier Lake. The incident note highlights unusual scenes on the water and local activity.

William Stanley an inventor who helped develop the electrical transformer and alternating current long distance power transmission died at his home in Great Barrington at age 58. He left Yale before finishing his studies to work in a new electrical industry and led major firms including Westinghouse Electric Company Stanley Electric Manufacturing and Stanley Instrument Company. He held numerous honors including the Edison Medal.
Bartenders' Union 77 met yesterday and voted to press an active campaign against prohibition leadership. The group pledged aid to the Massachusetts Trade Union Liberty League, with which the local union is affiliated.
Destitute Mystic with 172 aboard including 150 passengers anchors off Great Round Shoal Lightship in Nantucket after five weeks of storms. Crew say food ran out for two days and breakfast was only half a cup of coffee. Provisions moved by wagon from Siasconset to Quidnet Beach. Petrel towed Mystic to New Bedford.
About two hundred gray haired railroad men attended the New England Association of Railroad Veterans memorial service in King's Chapel. Edwin F. Brooks of Gardner, 83, the oldest active railroad man, led the march from Canal Street headquarters to the church. Brooks, 63 years in service and former first president, announced plans to retire soon.
The National League saw Philadelphia beat Cincinnati 4 to 3 in ten innings. New York defeated Chicago 6 to 4 while Brooklyn beat St. Louis 3 to 2. In the Eastern League Worcester routed Bridgeport 16 to 2 in eight innings.
Walter H. Phillips a former Malden Mass resident died from over exertion after trying to save his 5 year old son when the boat they were in capsized on Groton Lake. Rescuers answered cries and found the boy clinging with his head above water.
The body of Mr. Phillips, Montpelier Tenney Company manager, was found after a capsized boat chase on Groton Lake. Death resulted from physical collapse after heroic efforts to reach his son, who survived in an air pocket. Surviving relatives include his wife and four children. He was active in Apollo Club and Montpelier Choral Society.
