Governor Johnson asserts California's immigration stance is not discriminatory and claims no treaty rights are violated. He expresses hope Washington will accept the state's view on the alien land question and urges consideration of others' feelings.
Irene Fogg a Wellesley College junior and daughter of Charles F. Fogg of Auburndale is seriously injured when struck by an automobile owned by John B. Walcott of Beacon Street Brookline as she stood about to board a college gate car in Wellesley at 2 30 yesterday afternoon
Miss Fogg of Wilder Hall at the college was struck by a car driven by William St. Chapman while avoiding a wagon toward Natick. She was knocked unconscious, taken to Dr Royal Watch and Newton Hospital for an operation. Wolcott, a Brookline resident, faced the incident with his chauffeur in charge.
In Cincinnati on May 14 the deadlock between the Cincinnati Faction Company and striking workers persisted after a brief attempt to run cars on a line. Police and detectives escorted several street cars that carried no passengers. The effort was halted by late afternoon and service remained shut down with no violence reported.
Officials of the Nebraska Telephone Company reported a Seward tornado about 30 miles west of Lincoln caused ten deaths and fifty injuries, with several injuries fatal.
A severe storm ravaged southern Omaha at 7 PM, unroofing homes near Thirteenth and Gold streets and causing heavy damage. No injuries reported. With Easter tornado fresh in memory, residents sought shelter in cellars as three inches of rain fell downtown. Tornadoes climaxed at Seward and hit McCool, Lushton, and Grafton east of the city, demolishing several buildings with unknown casualties.
Patrick Quinlan, Industrial Worker of the World leader, was convicted at his second trial in Paterson New Jersey for inciting the riot tied to the silk mill strike. The jury delivered verdict after two hours. Quinlan was absent for the announcement. Judge Wilenert said no bench warrant will be issued while he remains under $750 bond.
Mayor Stone of Quincy granted licenses to two dance halls at Hough's Neck for this summer with conditions: no dancing after 11 p.m. and a regular Quincy officer on site paid by the licensee. Tremont Temple hosted a Progressive rally honoring Abraham Lincoln with W Bourke Cochran and Theodore Roosevelt mentioned.
Julius Schuman aged 12 of 69 Harvard Street Everett was beaten by his father Asher Schuman a tailor after returning home from a school hooky outing. Witnesses say the father kicked him knocked him into the gutter and continued the assault before vanishing toward the Chelsea line. Friends carried the unconscious boy nearly half a mile to Whidden Hospital where he remained unconscious at curfew. Police searched for the assailant but could not locate him. He attended Mt Washington Grammar School then the Everett and Boston Latin ball game earlier in the day.
Boston lawyer Frank A. Appleton died yesterday at his Brookline home after a period of illness. He had been prominent in legal circles and resided at 16 Searle Avenue.
Tax Collector Arthur C. Pendergast of Revere again called for the assessors' books last evening but clashed with them when presented for his perusal and did not see them. He said he wished to view the records to advance town business and asked several residents and newspaper men to accompany him into the assessors' office to witness no undue liability.
Assessor William H. Colcord tried to unlock a safe containing office books during a Wednesday evening visit with only one board member present. After adjusting the light and tapping numbers, the combination again failed, leaving the vault securely closed as an audience of onlookers watched.
