Nixon resigns as leader of Tammany Hall after six months in office. He broke with district leaders at a Tammany Hall meeting, refusing a vote of confidence and stating he could no longer retain self respect as leader. The district leaders’ meeting adjourned with unresolved tension.
At a packed Tammany Hall meeting on Tuesday 37 leaders heard Nixon announce his definitive resignation as grand sachem citing loss of self respect. He said he would retire from politics and focus on shipbuilding as rumors swirled of leadership upheaval including possible abolition of the finance committee and a gap in future control.
Local forecast for Boston and vicinity expects fair weather on Thursday and Friday with light westerly or northwest winds. In Eastern New York the forecast calls for fair conditions Thursday and Friday with partly cloudy skies and possible showers in western and extreme southern portions and variable winds.
Physicians endorse Fort Johnson medicine for its claimed ability to bolster the immune system and ward off colds. It is said to nourish the body, aid digestion, and improve stomach function, providing vitality sufficient to resist illness.
John T. Harper of Somerville died when a shallow rowboat with Sanford McCausland and Samuel Maxwell capsized opposite the New England Gas and Coke plant on the Mystic River yesterday afternoon. McCausland and Maxwell were rescued by a man from the Charlestown shore. Harper, 48, leaves a widow and two children.
President Roosevelt attends a May 14 ceremony in Washington to lay the cornerstone of the McKinley Memorial Ohio College of Government at the American University campus. Speakers include Secretary Wilson, Secretary Hay, Senators Hanna and Doliver, and others.
John Gardener Coolidge of Massachusetts has been chosen as first secretary of the American legation at Pekin, succeeding Squiers who becomes United States minister to Cuba. The 37 year old Boston broker, Harvard alumnus and bachelor, will serve in Pekin while residing with his parents at 147 Beacon Street.
The Sunday candy and soda bill faces possible delay as Senate committees did not lay it before the upper house yesterday. Having passed the Senate, it requires formal enactment before going to the Governor. If not enacted today, soda fountains stay closed next Sunday and the candy ban remains in force.
A Cambridge pamphlet titled The Brief ridicules Harvard Law School figures Professors Ames Beale Gray and Smith. It spoofs Ames’s Equity book and lampoons the Harvard Law Review, concluding many articles end with the stock line Further than this we do not care to go.
Two cars of the Boston Suburban Electric Company collided in Newtonville square this afternoon seriously injuring Mrs. E. J. Rice of Maple street Waltham and bruising Conductor William Gore.
The Dixie departed Sandy Hook at 11 04 tonight bound for Fort de France Martinique with nearly 3000 tons of provisions clothing for St Pierre disaster victims. The ship carries surgeons and about 5000 dollars in medical supplies. It is expected to reach Fort de France next Tuesday.
Refugees flood Fort de France Martinique reporting hundreds arriving from the island’s north. Survivors tell of Mont Pelee horrors with burned and maimed evacuees. many perished on the trek. Urgent aid needed as food supplies run short and suffering looms.
May 14 reports from St. Vincent describe widespread destruction from the Soufriere eruption with ash rain turning much of the island to desert and lava flows overwhelming areas near the volcano. In Castries a fire near Fort de France is noted, Mont Pelee remains erupting, and St Pierre shows severe damage including a ruined cathedral theatre and a vanished convent with many refugees.
Report from Guadeloupe and Dominica describes vast pumice stones drifting ashore on both islands. The Grappler, West India and Panama Telegraph Company repair ship, was lost at St Pierre with most of its crew tied to St Thomas families. Subscriptions opened to aid destitute relatives and bereaved families of the Grappler crew.
Mail advices report the British schooner Canadian, Captain Maisner, arrived at Barbadoes on May 6 from Demerara. She last sailed from St John, N B, March 27 for St Pierre, and was thought to be there during the destruction. The Italian bark Palmyra sailed from Barbadoes May 1 for Martinique.
London dispatch reports Dr Artier a sole survivor of St Pierre after Mont Pelea eruption. A cordon of soldiers and police around the town barred residents from leaving even after officials claimed danger passed. Artier escaped to Morne Rouge then fled to Fort de France.
At a West Indian Club dinner in London Hon Arthur Ponsonby urged Britain to mirror Roosevelt and aid St Vincent after the Martinique disaster. Co T Cox of St Kitts warned of broader suffering, noting trade losses and severe impact on inhabitants. The lord mayor opened a Mansion House relief fund for St Vincent victims.
