Giovanni Bettini, a young Italian officer, tried to kill himself last night in New York. He was hospitalized at St. Luke's with little hope of recovery. Bettini, visiting on a pleasure trip, formed an attachment with Miss Lillie Ayer of 5 West Fifty-seventh Street, but the engagement reportedly did not occur. After leaving the Windsor hotel, he walked toward Mr. Ayer’s residence, left behind letters identifying him, and was found in distress.
The wife of Rev. E. L. Stoddard of St. John's Free Church Jersey City Heights was fatally wounded when a pistol on a shelf exploded after she brushed it with a dusting broom. She died minutes later at about age 83. The incident shocked church circles. she was a cherished parishioner and choir leader.
Work began today on an inclined railway to lift passengers from the New York City and Northern railroad terminus at High Bridge to the bridge level. A massive cyclone struck Kansas City and surrounding towns on May 14, tearing roofs from homes and demolishing many buildings. Dozens killed or seriously injured include Willie Sieben and Mrs. Reed, with extensive property damage reported across Missouri, Kansas, and Michigan towns.
Dublin May 14 Joe Brady one of the Phoenix Park murderers was hanged amid a large crowd. A strong force kept order as Canon Kennedy and Father O Reilley administered the sacrament. Brady walked to the scaffold calmly and his death was swift. The crowd numbered about 10 000 and a black flag signaled the execution. Brady’s mother was urged not to risk statements to authorities. A Liverpool wreath carried a message of grief. Brady wrote a last letter to his mother and carried a prayer book. The Vatican sent a note to Irish bishops condemning collections to fund agitation for Mr Parnell.
