The Roxbury Horse Guards now B Company of the 102d Machine Gun Battalion reports 20 men missing in action over the last two days. Names appear to be late additions to a list started after the April 20 German offensive near Lille, which opened the fierce confrontation on the American line.
London reports that an Ottawa issued statement claiming the British war committee decided not to use the American army on the western front until it was a complete force were erroneous. In Washington, Baker and Lord Reading denied the rumors, saying the reports lacked official sourcing and contradicted England’s urged rapid overseas deployment.
Railroad administration officials estimate an increase of at least 25 percent in freight and passenger rates this year to cover higher costs of fuel wages and equipment. The added outlays this year are projected to be between 600 and 750 million dollars more than last year.
Advisers to Director General McAdoo propose a national railroad fare increase the largest in U.S. history. Rail workers may appeal to the Interstate Commerce Commission with final approval by President Wilson. Local arbitration committees will be appointed with two board sub-committee members. Field agents will investigate disputes and the War Labor Board will act as the Supreme court only if sub-committees fail or appeals arise.
In the American League Boston beat St. Louis 7 to 5 while Philadelphia halted Chicago 6 to 4. New York crushed Detroit 32 to 2 and Washington Cleveland rain halted action. In the National League Chicago defeated Boston 10 to 2 and Cincinnati won 7 to 5 over Brooklyn. Philadelphia 3 over St Louis 3 in 10 innings. Pittsburg New York rain affected play.
