Washington May 12 the administration awaited a reply from Governor Johnson to Secretary Bryan's telegram requesting a veto of the alien land owning bill passed by the California Legislature. Continued on Page 7-6th Column.
In a Police Court session Judge Michael Creed criticized jewelry salesman William Warner for assaulting Bertha Coombs known as the Girl With the Titian Hair. Warner was held in 800 bonds for the grand jury after an attorney urged 500, and the judge highlighted Warner’s own statements about a late night plan involving a 20 year old artist’s model.
Miss Dorothea H. Melcher of 8 Gordon Terrace Brookline and Miss Marie Emmons of 2 Bernard Terrace Brookline were nearly killed yesterday when the carriage they rode in was crushed by an automobile owned and operated by Elias J. Merrin of 58 Verndale Street Brookline.
At 3 45 p m on Commonwealth avenue and Pleasant street Alliston a collision involving Mr Merrin's car sent Miss Melcher through the windshield and Miss Emmons to the street. The girls were taken home with injuries while Merrin left the scene. both families are prominent residents and the drivers avoided discussing the incident.
New York May 12 A Progressive party dinner turned into a political issues discussion. Colonel Theodore Roosevelt sent a letter supporting the direct primary bill urged by Governor Sulzer.
John Purroy Mitchel, Walter Chandler, Amos Pinchot and others spoke against fusion with other parties and backed Governor Sulzer's direct primary bill. Theodore Roosevelt sent greetings, praising the Progressive approach and denouncing old party machines as blocking genuine self-government.
Lynn defeated Portland 3 to 2 while Lowell edged Nag River 4 to 3. Lawrence beat Brockton 5 with Worcester and New Bedford both scoring. game noted as lasting 18 innings. Box scores and more details appear on pages 10 and 11.
A fire trapped staff in Everett Grammar School on Northampton Street as Miss Eliza M. Everts escaped from the third floor with burns. Miss Charlotte Ontank and Janitor Henry Beverstock also fled. Tax Collector A. C. Pendergast and Assessors Samuel A. Segee and Samuel E. Bates deny discrepancies in town books and assault allegations about Pendergast.
Milford reports Carlo Tresca, the Italian worker leader who led the Paterson strike, is due here to aid the Draper Company strikers on Saturday. Joseph Ettor returns Thursday and Arturo Giovannitti arrives tomorrow to support strike leader Joseph M. Coldwell. Boston police on duty at the mills will go home tomorrow and be replaced by officers from Fall River and New Bedford.

Chief John Mullen’s team battled a blaze that raced through a school shaft toward the fourth floor. Miss Misa Everts, first to spot danger, escaped through the blaze with burns to face and hands, aided at a drug store later. An investigation by the Schoolhouse Commission will probe shaft safety across schools with open ducts.
State and local leaders join an extensive inquiry into charges by Revere Tax Collector Arthur C. Pendergast that the town assessors’ books are falsified showing a $900 discrepancy. District Attorney Pelletier, with State tax officials, police and the attorney general, seized the assessors’ office for three hours with a photographer and handwriting expert assisting.
Thirty pages of 1911 and 1912 assessors books were photo graphed with four minute exposures per page. Assistant District Attorney Lavelle led the photographer and obtained page duplicates. Officials declined to reveal expectations or sought entries not clearly understood as DA Pelletier and others conferred with experts and state officers.
