Boston chamber leaders attack consolidations that could erase the city’s commercial role. President Crocker of the Chamber and Chairman Jackson of the Railroad Board urge swift legislative action before any merger proceeds.
Boston and New York rail leaders deny mergers while heavy financiers push toward a Boston & Maine and New Haven dominance. American Express backs a deal to align Boston & Maine under New Haven control possibly through joint ownership. The motive is to keep Morse water routes from stealing Northeast business to St. John, New Brunswick.
Groton May 12 Young Kermit Roosevelt and Vanderbilt Webb dined with E H Harriman aboard his private car as he warned government ownership of railroads would be problematic He argued regulation is likely the great issue next campaign and that voters do not favor public control He questioned Congress backing for state rail decisions and joked about political interference in mail contracts and utilities.
In New York May 12 an auto touring car owned by Philip Lucas of Mount Vernon collided with an Eighth Avenue streetcar near an elevated rail pillar. The crash caused a gasoline explosion and fire. Lucas suffered a broken right arm while his companions W. S. Wilson of Elizabeth New Jersey, Miss B. W. Ripley of Boston and F. H. Capithon of Boston were not seriously injured. Lucas reportedly aimed to avoid two pedestrians in the road.
Senator Foraker of Ohio said no deal or compromise has been sought regarding Ohio politics. He disputed George B. Cox’s statement, noting Cox may seek party harmony but that endorsement and nomination should wait for the next state convention. He rejected actions by unofficial individuals as binding.
Unionists vow broad action to aid struck firms by refusing to handle goods for employers seeking non union aid. Individual teamsters may resign if dismissed for refusal. Bartenders’ Union orders members to reject liquor handled under non union conditions. Master Teamsters and Employers Association decline to state plans, promising to keep commerce flowing.

An 1907 report notes Dartmouth College enrollment at 1133, with Tucker credited for growth as the college ranks among New England institutions. Tucker resigns due to ill health, will take leave, return for lectures, and remain on the board to influence policy.
Ernest M. Hopkins reports that Dartmouth College President Tucker has sent his resignation to the trustees due to serious heart-related health problems after exhausting public engagements. The resignation was initially withdrawn at trustees’ urging and a new letter dated May 11, 1907 was issued following medical consultation.
Miss Maria Fuller, 19, of Los Angeles, jumped onto a relief train to Sutton after a wreck. Dr. W A Taylor declined she could not go, but a moment later she was pulled from the tender brake beam as the train reached 50 miles an hour. She explained she must go to aid as a member of Southgate Eastern Star.
In Santa Barbara on May 12 thirty people died and about twenty injured from the Honda wreck of the Isimlia special train. The incident involved New York and Pennsylvania Nobles of the Mystic Shrine returning from the Imperial Council meeting in Los Angeles.
A train carrying 145 Shriners and friends from Ismalia Temple in Buffalo and Tajah Temple in Reading, along with neighbors, rushed north on the Southern Pacific Coast line when the locomotive hit a defective switch at the Honda siding. The engine flipped onto its side into sand, and the forward coaches were crushed and burned.

At 11 o'clock this morning the birth register was inscribed with the name Alfonso Pio Cristina Eduardo for the newly born prince of the Asturias before the justice minister and king's notary. The christening, moved from next Tuesday, will be scheduled later by the King, and the queen and infant prince are reported in excellent condition in this evening's bulletin.
A fire at the Tenares copper mine in Velardena Durango Mexico on Friday night is said to have killed about ninety miners. Thirty five bodies have been recovered and seventeen are believed to have escaped. The mine is owned by the Guggenheims.
