Brattleboro Vermont May 12 a Kipling Balestier incident grips the town as arrests and bail proceedings unfold for an assault case linked to the verse depictions. The case heads to trial before Judge Newton with many visitors and local interest. Balestier, a 35 year old popular figure, defends against threats he denies making.

Report says the Boston society figure known as Mrs Everett may be Kate Bartlett. Authorities allege she had connections to the late John Stetson and took her own life in New York.
Hungry Flames Paterson N J May 11 The two upper stories of the Hinchliffe Malting and Brewing Company malt house were destroyed by fire this evening Three hundred fifty thousand bushels of malt burned and damaged by water Loss two hundred thousand dollars insured.
William Cohen was found burned to death in his ruined Bolton home on a Sunday. Authorities now suspect murder as dismemberment is noted with the skull missing. An axe was discovered beneath the body and Cohen reportedly had trouble with two neighbors.
In Everett a 35 year old unmarried woman Alice Lukin and Caroline Partridge a wife and mother killed themselves within the same hour. Lukin strangled herself with a bedpost noose after failed wrist cuts and an autopsy later cleared her of suspicion. Partridge used a razor across her throat and died in her bed chamber.
Miss Lukin, an Indiana transplant living with Andrew Nelson and wife at 220 Hancock near the Malden line, died by self act. An autopsy noted mental strain linked to financial woes and failed painting earnings. Relatives were urged to come claim her remains.
Mrs. Caroline Partridge, about 25, killed herself with three deep cuts at No 5 Marion Place after reportedly rejecting food. Her husband, a North Packing Co. bookkeeper, returned to a scene described as terrible. they had one young son and she had been ill for months.
