Official report lists twenty four British merchant ships over 1600 tons sunk in the week ending May 6. An additional twenty two vessels under 1600 tons and sixteen fishing craft were also lost.
The report lists ship losses and attacks by nationality and tonnage, noting British merchantmen over 1600 tons sunk and under 1600 tons sunk, plus fishing vessels sunk. It states improvement versus prior weeks, with the same sunk percentage as last week and continued totals.
May 9 1920 Petrograd reports the Russian government issued a declaration in favor of forming a coalition ministry. The move reflects a push to broaden the governing coalition amid postwar political tensions.
Justice Minister Kerensky sends letters to the Duma and Soldiers' Council committee inviting democracy representatives to share in governing. The provisional government, formed after the revolution, acts until a national assembly decides Russia's political framework.
Secretary McAdoo announced the 2 billion dollar Liberty Loan issue will be sold in denominations from 50 dollars to 100 thousand dollars. The bonds mature in 30 years, may be redeemed by the government in 15, and are payable in four instalments with a conversion feature to higher rate bonds issued later in the war.
The subscription requires 2 percent on application with balance due in stages from June 28 to August 30 totaling 100 percent. Bonds dated June 15 will bear interest semi annually on June 15 and December 1. Two classes issued: coupon and registered. Registered minimum is $100 with higher denominations up to $100,000. Coupon bonds payable to bearer come in $50, $100, $500 and $1000.
National League Chicago defeated Brooklyn 7 while other games were rained out. American League Boston beat Washington 4 1 in the first game and Washington won 4 3 in the second. Detroit swept Cleveland 4 1 and 9 1 in two games. Chicago downed St. Louis 4 2.
New York surrendered unconditionally to Marshal Joffre and Rene Viviani at 4 35 pm. The city gave them a vast triumphal entry with a welcome by about a million citizens. The event marked an historic demonstration of esteem for the French leaders.
The visiting men, arriving by special train from Philadelphia, express emotion as New York honors their delegation. They view Bartholdi’s Statue of Liberty at the entrance to the city and stay at Henry Clay Frick’s Fifth Avenue mansion, before continuing their commemorations of the ally nation.
Ottawa report from the war records office states casualties among the Canadian expeditionary forces since the war began totaled 89,843 as of yesterday, including those killed wounded and missing.
The Legislature voted to meet in a joint session next Saturday afternoon to receive former Italian Premier Viviani and French Marshal Joffre. It is one of the first Saturday joint sessions in years, following Governor McCall's recommendation in his message.

In a Brookline and Boston police pursuit, two car thieves fled after stealing a Henley Kimball Co. auto opposite the Public Garden. One thief drowned in Jamaica Pond before being captured. the other was trapped in nearby woods. Arrested were Arvin G. Duval 18 Dorchester and William J. Stewart 32 Boylston Street.
Official reports from London say Turkish agents are active in Switzerland to ensure Turkey’s continued existence. If Constantinople remains in Turkish hands, the Turks are believed to permit complete freedom of the Dardanelles to all who come.

Orders summoning Major General John J. Pershing to Washington have sparked speculation about a possible command for a military expedition to France. Officials would not confirm or deny reports linking his visit to selecting a commander for the expedition.
General Pershing enjoys administration confidence as commander of the punitive expedition and now heads much of the regular army. With mobilization camps planned in his territory, observers suggest his trip concerned organization work though Secretary Baker declined comment. Generals Wood Bell and Edwards have visited Washington recently, but Baker said no conference of commanders is planned.
Patrick Donnelly 55 of 519 West Fourth Street South Boston died of heart disease shortly after 6 PM while being moved from D Street police station to City Hospital. He was arrested in the early morning on a charge of drunkenness.
Washington May 9 The Naval Consulting Board has submitted a complete plan to Secretary Daniels to counter German U boats. W L Saunders and navy leaders previously skeptical now back the plan. Technical details are censored but the announcement signals a major breakthrough.
Elmer A. Sperry, famed inventor of the gyro scope compass, develops a radical new anti submarine device. In two to three weeks the Navy Department will complete practical tests under navy officers from multiple technical branches to determine if the invention holds up under real conditions.
