Morning papers highlight a manifesto issued in Ireland by 18 Roman Catholic bishops, three Protestant bishops, and five county council chairmen. They protest partition and urge public signatures against the move, noting the unprecedented cross church backing for a political aim.
The bill clears committee with major tariff increases and higher postage. Letter postage rises to three cents and post cards to two cents. Second class mail rates soar, and tobacco, cigarette, and liquor duties more than double.

The American League saw Cleveland beat Detroit 5 to 2 in the first game with a second game abandoned by rain, and New York beat Philadelphia 4 to 2. Boston and Washington played a two-game set with wet grounds and cold conditions.

In Floucster on May 8 a bullet from an altercation between John Jelliff and Gardner Buclow struck 12 year old Minnie Ellis, likely fatally. Five shots fired. both men arrested. Jelliff was crossing tender at Willow street crossing when the clash occurred. The cause remains unknown.
The steamer Sebastian, a British motor vessel of 1846 tons, is on fire ten miles off the Nantucket Shoals lightship. A second steamer, part of a transatlantic line, stands by. Navy yard officials withheld further details. Sebastian was last reported in New York on April 25.
Boston has offered to buy 16 990 000 dollars worth of Liberty loan bonds after four days of subscriptions. The purchase was announced from Washington on May 8.
Unsettled forecast for Boston and vicinity predicts local showers on Wednesday with a warmer Thursday. Washington reports New England forecast showing rain midweek and fair, warmer conditions by Thursday, with a shift to lighter winds.
Treasury and Federal Reserve officials held an all day session outlining maturity terms denominations and payment methods for the massive Liberty bond issue and signaling nearing agreement on key features. The conference aims to finalize the framework though final revisions remain possible.
The proposal calls for maturity options of 15 years at government redemption and 30 years final. Denominations range from 100 to 100000 dollars with initial payments of 2 to 5 percent. Miss Nattie Walters of Allston died after collapsing at the Relief Hospital following cerebral hemorrhage while walking through the South station last night. She was 53.
